Govi’s Record-Setting Performance Highlights Vikings' 2-0 Day in Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore Megan Govi, a week after tying the record for most singles wins in a season (12), bested the mark by two, as Portland State improved to 10-9 overall on Tuesday, defeating both Mesa Community College and Arizona Christian, by identical 9-0 scores (all-three doubles matches count as one point each), in Tempe and Scottsdale, Ariz. Govi secured her 13th and 14th wins of the season, improving upon the previous record set by Leinani McAneney in 1998, while senior Marti Pellicano also reached a milestone, tallying her 12th win, matching the previous single-season best.

In doubles action the Vikings looked impressive in both matches as all three PSU tandems went a prefect 2-0.

From the No. 1 spot Pellicano and Mandy Mallen defeated the Mesa Community College tandem of Laura Varamillo and Julia Maracenco, 8-1, while rolling to an 8-1 victory over Jessica Trink and Julia Anaya of Arizona Christian.

The team of Marina Todd and Nayanatara Vadali found success from the No. 2 spot, downing Savannah Skarda and Madison Porter, 8-3, in their first match of the day, while dominating Lea Souvigne and Tiffany Levin to the tune of 8-0.

The PSU doubles squad of Govi and Kelsey Frey also had a strong day, recording wins over Mesa's Hayley Stermon and Karah Headquist, 8-1 and downed Taylor Als and Sarah Edwards, 8-0, to complete PSU's perfect 6-0 doubles record on Tuesday.

Singles play was a similar story for the Viks as the team only allowed their two opponents to tally eight games against, as the squad cruised to a perfect 12-0.

Mallen recorded her sixth and seventh wins from the No. 1 position, defeating the Thunderbirds' Maracenco, 6-0, 6-1 and Arziona Christian's Als, 6-0, 6-0.

Todd won from the No. 2 spot in the morning match against Mesa Community College, taking down Porter, 6-0, 6-1, while she sat out singles against Arizona Christian.

Frey was the third Viking to reach a double-digit singles win total, recording wins over Mesa's Skarda, 6-1, 6-1 and the Firestorm's Trink, 6-2, 6-0, to improve to 10-8 in her freshman campaign.

Govi continued to make her mark with two wins, upending the Thunderbird's Headquist, 6-0, 6-0, and Arizona Christian's Julia Anaya, 6-0, 6-0, improving to 14-4, holding the Viks' best singles record.

Pellicano reached her 12th win of the season, one match too late to break the record but still reaching a former program best, defeating Mesa Community College's Stermon, 6-0, 6-1 and cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against the Firestorm's Levin.

Finally Alexa McDonald inched closer to the double-digit plateau earning her eighth and ninth wins of the year, defeating Mesa's Varamillo, 6-0, 6-1 while she defeated, Arizona Christian's Edwards, 6-0, 6-0.

The Viks will next travel to Boise, Idaho for a two match slate against Boise State and Lewis-Clark State College, playing the Broncos on Thursday and the Warriors on Friday. Matches are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
