Women’s Tennis Concludes Spring Break Trip with 7-0 Win over Lewis-Clark State

BOISE, Idaho – The Portland State women's tennis team finished up its four-match “spring break” road trip with a 7-0 victory against Lewis-Clark State College in Boise, Idaho on Saturday morning. The Vikings improved to 11-10 on the year.

After a tough 7-0 loss to Boise State the day prior, which saw two key contributors unable to play due to the flu, PSU returned Marti Pellicano and Kelsey Frey to the starting lineup and their impacts were felt immediately.

The No. 2 doubles team of Pellicano and Mandy Mallen looked like they hadn't skipped a beat since Pellicano's absence, rolling to a 8-2 victory against  Bryn Oliveiera and Rye Hewett.

Frey and Megan Govi also looked impressive from the No. 3 position, earning the doubles-point clinching win against Deanri Human and Martina Florencia, to the tune of 8-4.

On court No. 1 the Nayanatara Vadali and Marina Todd fought off several deficits to push the match to a seven-point tiebreaker against Dorothy Chong and Livia Blasque. The Warriors opened up a 3-0 lead but the Viks came back to make it 3-2. Lewis-Clarke scored four of the next five points to take the match, 8-7 (7-3).

With the doubles point in tow the Portland State Vikings got to work in singles.

Alexa McDonald breezed through her first set 6-0 from the No. 6 spot, and secured a second-set victory, 6-3, against Martina Florencia. With the win the sophomore from Palm Desert, Calif., is the fourth member of the 2013 edition of the Portland State Vikings to reach the double-digit win, plateau.

Pellicano earned her13th win of the year from the No. 5 spot shortly thereafter, downing Human, 6-0, 6-3, putting PSU up 3-0.
Frey clinched the match for Portland State from the No. 4 spot, fighting through the remains of the flu, to score a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Rye Hewett. The win marks Frey's 11th as she was the third Viking to reach double digits.

Todd kept the wins coming from the No. 2 spot, as she split sets with Biasque, 6-3, 2-6 and was down 6-1 in the 10-point tiebreaker. Battling a sore shoulder, Todd reeled off nine of the next 11 points to take the tiebreaker and win her third win of the year.

From the No. 1 spot Mallen shrugged off a slow start in the first set, coming back from a 4-1 deficit to win the frame 6-4, and then battling to a 6-4 win in the second, to beat Chong, pushing the lead to 6-0.

To cap off the afternoon, Govi added to her record singles win total, grinding out a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Hewett, in the No. 4 position, securing her 15th win of the season. With the win the Viks tallied the clean sweep in singles and took the match by a final score of 7-0.

Portland State concludes its “spring break” road trip with a 3-1 record and now enters the homestretch of the season, facing off with three-straight Big Sky matches to close out the year. The Viks will host the University of Northern Colorado at Club Green Meadows on April 6. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
