LEWISTON, Idaho – One week after being honored in the annual senior day ceremony at Portland State men's tennis (7-11, 1-5) final home contest of the season,
Zach Lubek, quite possibly tallied his final win as a member of Portland State, against Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho this afternoon. With the dual knotted up at 3-3 the senior from Mont., fought to a third-set victory to clinch the team's seventh win of the season.
Portland State continued its trend of superb doubles play against the Warriors registering three more wins and taking the double point yet again. PSU has now converted the doubles point in six of their last seven matches.
Senior
Connor Gilmore and
Brent Wheeler took care of business at the No. 1 spot, downing the LCSC team of Anders Tischer and Jeff Lowndes, 8-5.
Antoine Bechmann and
Ian Risenhoover were also victorious, coming up with their sixth win as a doubles pairing in 2013. The PSU tandem downed Andres Bustani and Lincoln Gay in the No. 2 position, 8-5.
In the No. 3 spot the team of
Abhinav Mishra and
Alec Marx had their perfect doubles record contested by the No. 3 Warriors team of Quentin Wacquez and Sam Tozer, as the tandem was down early in the match. The Vikings fought back and registered a tight 8-6 victory, improving to 7-0 this season to complete the doubles sweep for PSU.
With the doubles point in tow, Portland State turned to singles action to seal the victory.
The Vikings got off to a good start at court No. 1 as Bechmann appeared to be close to cruising through the first set but the match was halted as Tischer was forced to retire due to injury, giving the junior his seventh win from the No. 1 spot this season. The quick win gave PSU a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Viks extended their lead to 3-0 at the No. 2 spot as Gilmore scored his ninth win of the season and his third from the No. 2 spot rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Tozer.
The Warriors, staying true to their name, fought back tallying the next three singles wins to even the match at 3-3.
The first win came at the No. 3 spot as Wheeler was upset by Gay, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 to push the score to 3-1.
Wil Cochrane was edged on court No. 4, 6-4, 7-6 (2), as the Warriors inched closer to a tied score.
Lukas Kortus fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 as Alberto Sanz, completed the comeback, tying the score at 3-3.
With the match now hanging in the balance all eyes turned to court No. 6.
Senior
Zach Lubek, who entered the match with the team's best winning percentage with a 4-1 record in dual matches this season, entered a decisive third set with Lowndes, taking the first 7-5 but falling the second 6-2.
The crafty veteran relied on his experience, at one point fighting through a rolled ankle, to record a clutch, 7-5 victory, sealing the 4-3 win for Portland State and quite possibly finishing his last match in the starting lineup with a victory.
Portland State will now travel to Cheney, Wash., to play their last match of the weekend, taking on Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon. Match time is slated for 2 p.m.
