Portland State Track and Field Keeps On Rolling at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Portland State women and men's track and field teams kept on rolling through their 2013 outdoor slate this weekend as they both completed the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State, in Sacramento Calif. The women's team placed fifth of eight teams with 79 points while the men tallied 12 points and placed eighth.

Aside from their impressive placing in the meet, which unlike many contests, was a scored head-to-head competition, the women's team reeled in six more qualifying times for the Big Sky outdoor championship, hosted by Portland State starting May 8th.

In the women's 100-meter dash, Geronne Black took top honors with her time of 11.65 seconds, good for second place. Sierra Brooks, finished behind her in sixth with a mark of 12.01, but the time qualified her for the conference meet. Jazmin Ratcliff and Adia White also competed in the event with marks of 12.20 seconds and 12.79, respectively.

Black and Brooks struck again in the 200m, both tallying qualifying times in the event as Black finished with a time of 24.45 while Brooks finished with a mark of 24.71. Dominique Maloney, who had already qualified for the conference meet in the 200m, took the top Portland State placing, with a 24.45 mark and a fifth-place finish.

Maloney, who has quite possibly been PSU's most impressive runner so far through the outdoor season, continued her stellar meet, recording the program's second-best time in the 400-meter dash with a third-place finish and a time of 55.33.

Ratcliff impressed in the 100-meter hurdle event, tallying the program's fifth-best mark with a time of 14.29 seconds, punching her ticket to the Big Sky championship in May.

Meanwhile the Portland State relay team, which holds the track record at Hornet Stadium in the 400m, ran to a second-place finish as Brooks, Black, Maloney, and Ratcliff came in with a mark 46.03 seconds.

The Portland State distance runners secured several more top times as Bianca Martin once again caught the attention of PSU fans, recording PSU's second best time in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.73. That time also qualified her for the Big Sky conference championship in May.

Meanwhile Camelia Mayfield impressed once again in the 5000-meter run tallying the program's fourth fastest time as she took top honors in the event, while Brittany Long also moved up all-time leaderboard, this time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking in with a time of 11:25. That time qualifies her for the conference championship as well as moves her into second-place all-time in the event.

In the field events Montaisha Moore qualified for the Big Sky championship in the triple jump with a distance of 11.64m (38-02.25) good for second place in the event.

Meanwhile Ali Super also qualified for the conference championship coming in fourth in the javelin throw with a distance of 40.89m (134-02). However, the best PSU distance in the event came from Allison Burkett, who had already qualified for the Big Sky meet, as she threw for a final distance of 41.81m (137-02).

The men's team also saw a couple of qualifiers as Tony Crisofulli ensured his appearance at the conference meet as he ran in the 800-meter run coming in with a time of 1:52.94.

Meanwhile in the field events Rockwell Tufty earned his first trip to the Big Sky outdoor championships as he competed in the high jump and tallied a final mark of 2.00m (6-06.75), placing second-overall in the event.

The Portland State track and field teams will next compete at the Oregon Relays on April 19-20 in Eugene, Ore.
