FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Portland State women's track and field team gave its home fans some drama heading into the final day of the 2013 Big Sky outdoor track and field championships, dueling with the Sacramento State Hornets for much of the final day, but in the end taking second-place in Forest Grove, Ore. The Vikings' runner-up finish is the best its had since 2006, when that edition of PSU also took second.\

Portland State received strong performances from likely sources as Dominique Maloney headlined the group on the final day. The senior took full advantage of her final conference meet, medaling in almost every event she participated in. She kicked it off with the 4x100-meter relay teaming with Sierra Brooks, Geronne Black and Jazmin Ratcliff, giving the Vikings 10-team points to start off the day.

She then set personal-bests in the 200-meter and 400-meter events. Maloney took third in the 400m with a time of 54.44, while she ran to second-place in the 200m with a time of 24.27.

With the Vikings in  a dead-heat with Sacramento State for the top spot in the conference, they were bolstered by a strong 1500-meter run by the distance duo of Bianca Martin and Amber Rozcicha. The two runners took second and third, respectively, with times of 4:24.63 and 4:25.52.

The Viks also received points from Ratcliff, Joenisha Vinson and Cassandra Sidner, as Ratcliff placed third (13.79) in the 100-meter hurdles, Vinson took fourth (13.95) and Sidner sixth (14.57).

The Vikings then medaled both Black and Brooks in the 100-meter dash as the senior from Brooklyn, N.Y., tallied a time of 11.57 with a first-place finish, while Brooks took bronze with a time of 11.85. Ratcliff also recorded a point with a time of 12.04.
PSU received some big points from Sydney Johnson in the discus event later in the day, as she threw for a distance of 45.02 (147-08) and five team points.

The Portland State women's team pulled within two of the Hornets, however a dominating performance in the 800-meter event by Sacramento State all-but sunk first-place aspirations as the Vikings finished the event in second-place, with 110 points. The Hornets finished first with 155.5 and Northern Arizona concluded the meet in third with 93 points.

The men's team shook off a rough preliminary day by tallying points in the meet's final contest.

It started with J.J. Rosenberg in the 400-meter dash as the senior raced through his final conference meet with a fifth-place finish and a time of 48.62 seconds.

Likewise Tony Crisofulli refused to quit as he battled through an apparent leg injury during the final lap of his 800-meter run to record a time of 1:58.08 and adding one more point to the Portland State total.

Sean MacKelvie headlined the PSU men's afternoon with his gold medal in the triple jump. The senior secured a distance of 14.37m (47-01.75) as the men's team finished the meet with 21 points and a ninth-place conclusion. Northern Arizona took first on the men's side with 143 team points with Sacramento State taking second with 136 and Weber State taking third with a final total of 125.

At the end of the day Vinson earned yet another award, earning the Big Sky's Most Outstanding Female Athlete for her point total in the heptathlon.

The Vikings wrap up another Big Sky outdoor championship, the first ever hosted by Portland State and now turn their attention to the NCAA regionals and nationals as several PSU competitors will compete in the events. Stay tuned to GoViks.com to follow them through the process.
