Complete All-Sport Trophy Standings
OGDEN, Utah - The Portland State women and Montana State men have won the 2012-13 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophies.
The Portland State women finished second at the outdoor track and field championship last weekend in Forest Grove, Ore., picking up 11 points. Portland State finished with 68.5 points. Sacramento State was second with 62.
This is Portland State's first outright Women's All-Sports Trophy. The Vikings shared the 2010-11 award with Montana. Portland State's women's season was highlighted by a regular-season titles in volleyball, and co-regular-season championshis in soccer and softball, and second-place finishes in golf and indoor and outdoor track and field.
Montana State's men earned seven points at the outdoor track and field championship, enough to hold off Northern Arizona for the All-Sports Trophy. Montana State finished with 58.5 points. Northern Arizona, which won the men's outdoor track and field championship, netted 56.
Portland State men's teams finished 11th in the All-Sports Trophy competition.
Montana State has now won the Men's All-Sports trophy five times. The Bobcats also won in 1964-65, 1966-67, 2002-03 and 2004-05.
The Big Sky Conference has sponsored a Men's All-Sports Trophy since the league's inception in 1963-64. A Women's All-Sports Trophy started in 1988-89, the first year the conference sponsored women's sports.
Points are awarded based on regular-season standings in the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball, soccer, football, softball, tennis and volleyball. In cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, and golf, all-sports points are awarded by basis of finish in Big Sky Championships.
This was the first year of a new scoring system implemented by league administrators. The winner was determined by total points, and not average per sport. On the women's side, the top seven scores were used to determine the winner. The league sponsors nine women's sports. Montana State does not field a soccer team. Seven of the 11 members compete in softball, which is being sponsored for the first time.
Montana State's men's season was highlighted by a co-championship in football, a co-regular-season championship in tennis, a second-place finish at the indoor track and field championship, and a third-place finish in cross country.
This summer, the league will announce the winner of the 2012-13 Presidents' Cup presented by Red Lion. The Presidents' Cup is a combination of athletic and academic success. Overall athletic points will be calculated with certain academic criteria to determine a winner. Montana State won the 2011-12 Presidents' Cup.
Northern Arizona finished the 2012-13 season with the most overall points with 115.5. Sacramento State was second with 114, followed by Montana State with 99.5.
