AUSTIN, Texas – Despite some inhospitable weather over the last few days in Austin, Texas, the Portland State Vikings wrapped up the NCAA regional event having several Vikings qualify for the semifinal round of the meet but none earned the right to advance to national championship in Eugene, Ore.
Both
Bianca Martin and
Jazmin Ratcliff advanced to the semifinal rounds of their respective events as Martin moved on in the 1500 run, while Ratcliff also moved past the first round of the 100-meter hurdles.
Martin, who ran 4:24.45 in her first attempt, was unable to best that mark on her second go-around with a time of 4:32.49 and a 20
th-place finish. The story was a bit different for Ratcliff. The Portland, Ore., native took 17
th in the preliminary round of the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.86. She improved upon that time in the semifinals but wasn't able to move far enough in the pack to warrant a berth to nationals as she came in 20
th with a mark of 13.71, her personal best.
The Vikings' 4x100 relay team was also in action this weekend as the team of
Sierra Brooks,
Geronne Black,
Dominique Maloney and Ratcliff ran their last race as a team, flirting with a school-record in the process, as they placed 16
th with a mark of 45.36.
Camelia Mayfield also competed this weekend, in the 10,000-meter event, clocking in with a time of 37:24.79 and a 39
th place finish.
While the Vikings didn't qualify anyone for the national meet in Austin, Texas, Portland State will still send senior
Joenisha Vinson to Eugene as she qualified for nationals in the Heptathlon, after her record-setting performance at the Big Sky championship, hosted by PSU this year. The national meet will take place in Eugene, Ore., from June 5-8. Check back to GoViks.com for updates on Vinson and her quest for a national title.
