FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: This meet marks the first time that Portland State has hosted the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the program's history. The meet is held at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., taking place May 8-11. The first two days feature the multi-events as team's make their way through the decathlon and heptathlon. The next two days will feature a wide array of track and field events, with the meet concluding with championship events on Saturday.

HOME TEAM OUTLOOK: Host Portland State sends 30 total entrants with 12 competing for the men's side while 18 will look to score points for the women. On the women's side the Vikings see a good mix of sprinters, distance runners and field competitors. Geronne Black headlines the sprinters as she is joined by Dominique Maloney who had an impressive outdoor campaign, Sierra Brooks, Jazmin Ratcliff and Dejaunae Toliver and Cassandra Sidner. The resurgence of the PSU distance program is evidenced by five members qualifying for the championship as Amber Rozcicha, Bianca Martin, Brittany Long, Camelia Mayfield and Valerie Mitchell all punched their tickets. Joenisha Vinson will take part in a myriad of events and will be the lone multi-event participant. Hanna Johnson and Sydney Johnson will both compete along with Shae Carson and Ali Super in throws with Montaisha Moore headlining the jumps.

On the men's side J.J. Rosenberg, Jake Ovgard and newcomer Sheldon Prince man the sprint events while, Tony Crisofulli and Neil Seibert man middle-distance and distances for PSU. The Viking send quite a few field athletes to Forest Grove, Ore., as Rockwell Tufty, Tyson Stipic, Sean MacKelvie and Michael Harvey all qualified for jumps, meanwhile Selmar Hutchins is the only thrower for the Vikings.

WARM WELCOME: The Big Sky welcomes two new teams to the fold this year as Southern Utah and North Dakota compete in their first outdoor championship as conference members. The Thunderbirds come from the Great West in football and the Summit League for other sports, while North Dakota also makes the jump from the Great West.

FLASH BACK: 2012 saw the Northern Arizona men's team and the Sacramento State women's squad take the team titles. It was the fifth time in the last decade that the Lumberjacks had reeled in a title and the first under head coach Eric Heins. Meanwhile the Hornets continued their championship streak, making it five-straight Big Sky titles as head coach Kathleen Raske continued her period of prosperity in California. The Lumberjacks tallied a whopping 221 points with runner up Montana State registering 164. Meanwhile the Hornets totaled 173 team points with the Bobcats once again coming up a tad short with 121.5 points.

CHAMPIONSHIP BREAKDOWN: Of the current members of the Big Sky, five teams have won both the men's and women's outdoor track and field championship. For the men, Northern Arizona tops out with 17 Big Sky championships, while Weber State comes in with 10 and Sacramento State, Montana State and Montana earning one each. Seven Championships were won by schools no longer affiliated with the conference. For the women's championship, its Northern Arizona once again tallying the most titles, with seven. Sacramento State enters this weekend with a current streak of five, tying Weber State's mark of five championships, with Idaho State and Montana having earned one each. There have been 10 titles that were won by members no longer with the Big Sky.

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD-HOLDER BREAKDOWN: When looking at the championship record book for the Big Sky there have been numerous all-time performances at conference meets. When breaking it down to which players from which teams hold those records there are some interesting numbers. On the men's side, Idaho State has the most championship records as eight student-athletes have tallied championship best marks, with all but one of those marks coming between 1969 and 1976. Weber State holds the next highest as they have five record-holders with Montana and Sacramento State claiming three-championship records. Meanwhile Northern Arizona, Eastern Washington and Montana State all hold three conference championship-best marks. These marks have stood the test of time as well as the only eight records have been set since 2000.

On the women's side things are look a little more even, as three teams share a tie for the lead with the most number of set records as Northern Arizona, Montana and Weber State all have four championship-best marks. Portland State, Idaho State and Eastern Washington hold two records apiece with Sacramento State and Montana State holding one.

POWER IN NUMBERS: With this weekend's meet using a team scoring system, it's important to qualify as many athletes as possible for teams to contend for the Big Sky title. When breaking down the rosters for this week's meet, Eastern Washington is tied for the most entrants on both the men and women's side with 25 each. Montana, Sacramento State and Weber State also enter 25 competitors on the men's side while the Hornets also send 25 athletes to conference. Host Portland State comes in with 30 total entrants with 12 competing for the men's side while 18 will look to score points for the women.
