FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Portland State senior
Joenisha Vinson, until Wednesday, had never competed at a PSU home track meet, and she took full advantage of her first opportunity as she ended the first day of the Big Sky outdoor track and field event in first place of the heptathlon, in Forest Grove, Ore. Vinson didn't finish lower than third-place in any of the four events she competed in, taking first place in both the high jump and shot put events.
Vinson started out with a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdle event, clocking in with a time of 13.87 and scoring 997 points in the process. Vinson then impressed the Portland State fans, setting a new personal record in the high jump with a height of 1.68m (5-06.00), accruing 830 points.
Vinson then moved onto the shot put event, posting a distance of 12.28m (40-03.50), nearly six inches longer than the next best entrant, and she finished the day with a second-place showing in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 25.37 and added 853 points to her overall total.
Vinson finished the day with a grand total of 3,360 points, atop the leader-board. Southern Utah's Shaye Maurer is in second with a total of 3318, with Montana's Lindsey Hall in third with a total of 3103.
