Portland State Women’s Tennis Announces Team Awards for the 2012-13 Season

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team announced its team awards for the 2012-13 season at the squad's team banquet this past Friday. Freshman, Kelsey Frey, Junior, Marina Todd, Sophomore, Megan Govi and senior Marti Pellicano were all honored during the dinner.

Frey earned the team's Impact Award as voted by the team, for the freshman or sophomore that has had the biggest impact on the team this season. That could definitely be said about Frey, who tallied the best freshman campaign ever recorded by a first-year player on the Park Blocks as she went 13-8 overall in singles play with an impressive 8-5 record at the No. 3 spot. She also paired with Govi for most of the year, tallying a 14-7 record in doubles action. To go along with those stats, Frey was also the first player to record a Big Sky Player of the Week award since Yuki Sugiyama accomplished the feat in 2011. The Grants Pass, Ore., native did it early in the year after going 5-1 between singles and doubles as the team swept the weekend defeating Seattle, Linfield and Idaho.

Todd for the third-consecutive year garnered the Most Improve Player of the Year award for her continued improvement in the PSU lineup. Todd consistently played in the No. 2 and No. 1 spots for Portland State, tallying four wins and taking many more contests to third sets. Todd also teamed with Nayanatara Vadali in doubles, accruing nine doubles wins in 2012-13.

Govi, according to statistics, had the most prolific year that any PSU tennis player has had in the program's history. Govi set the new season singles wins and conference wins records going 17-6 and 7-3, respectively. Govi was also a threat in doubles, teaming with Frey and going 14-8 during this last campaign. The San Rafael, Calif., native was also only the second Big Sky All-Conference selection in the program's history, tallying an honorable mention nod this season.

Finally Pellicano was awarded the Helmet and Horns award, an accolade that recognizes what the PSU coaching staff views as the ideal Portland State student athlete. This award recipient is someone that is a fierce competitor, an exceptional student and someone that has tremendous leadership qualities. Pellicano, who served as the team's captain this season, was one of four players to surpass the double-digit win total. She went 14-9 with an 8-5 record from the No. 6 position. She also provided great production in doubles going  13-9, teaming with Mandy Mallen for a majority of the year. The senior ends her PSU career having received a team award every year she played, earning the Impact Award twice and the Helmet and Horns award twice.

The Vikings finished the year with a program-best 12-12 record, and improving upon its 2012 conference win total, totaling three Big Sky wins this season. The Viks were the first team out of the conference tournament and return seven players to the squad next year.
