PORTLAND, Ore. — Freshman Gifton Okoronkwo moved up to No. 2 all-time in the triple jump Saturday, as the Portland State track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Cherry & Silver Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
Okoronkwo jumped 47-08.50 (14.54m) on his third attempt in the triple jump, a jump that would have led the Big Sky in the event entering the weekend. Okoronkwo has now cleared 14 meters in each of his first two meets as a Viking, and stands just over two feet from Yuriy Yermakov's 14-year-old PSU record of 50-00.50 (15.25m).
 
Besides Okoronkwo, sophomore Sheldon Prince set a new personal best in the 60 meters with a time of 7.11 seconds in the prelims Saturday. Prince also set personal bests in the 200 and 400 meters Friday, giving him three PRs for the weekend.
 
Freshman Genna Settle tied a personal best in the prelims of the women's 60 meters, as she finished in 7.71 seconds. Settle also ran the 60 in 7.71 seconds at the UW Indoor Preview last Saturday, and remains just .01 second away from qualifying for the Big Sky Championships in the 60 meters at 7.70 seconds.
 
Additionally, junior Montaisha Moore beat the Big Sky qualifying standard in the triple jump for the second straight week, jumping 37-08.75 (11.50m) Saturday. Moore's jump Saturday did not beat her mark from a week ago, though, when she jumped 38-00.75 (11.60m) at the UW Indoor Preview.
 
Overall, the Vikings hit three new Big Sky qualifying marks between both days at the Cherry & Silver Invitaitonal, while two others (Okoronkwo in the triple jump, Whitney Diggs in the 400m) improved their qualifying marks.
 
The Vikings return to Dempsey Indoor next week, as the teams compete at the UW Invitational on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1.
