Jackson Makes Strong Debut in Pentathlon at UW Invitational

DAY ONE RESULTS

SEATTLE, Wash. —
Competing in her first pentathlon at Portland State, freshman CeCelia Jackson easily qualified for the Big Sky meet, as the Viking track and field teams opened competition at the the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor Friday.

Jackson placed fourth with 3,547 points Friday, ahead of two athletes from Big Sky-rival Sacramento State. Jackson's mark also ranks her fourth all-time in the pentathlon at Portland State, and would have put her second in the Big Sky and in the top 50 nationally entering the weekend.

Jackson set personal bests in the long jump (17-03.50, 5.27m), shot put (33-02.00, 10.11m) and 800 meters (2:33.84) en route to her mark in the pentathlon Friday, and finished in the top five in three of the five events.

Besides Jackson, senior Camelia Mayfield lowered her own school record in the indoor 5,000 meters by over 40 seconds, finishing in 17:02.49 to crush her previous best of 17:43.79. Mayfield's time also beat the Big Sky qualifying mark of 17:40.00, though she had already cross-qualified for the event due to running a qualifying time in the 3,000 meters at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 18. Additionally, Mayfield's time would have ranked her atop the Big Sky entering the weekend.

Freshman Cheryn Trapp nearly also ran a Big Sky-qualifying time Friday, as she finished in 17:44.46. Trapp joins Mayfield as the Vikings' only women's runners to crack 18 minutes in the indoor 5,000 meters in program history.

A number of PSU men set personal bests in the men's 5,000 meters as well, with sophomore T-Roy Brown (15:17.15), junior Jake Schwartz (15:25.16), sophomore Jonathan Talik (15:27.31) and freshmen Kuba Grzeda (15:36.85) and Jordan Landstrom (15:52.28) all setting new personal standards Friday. Brown, Schwartz and Talik now stand third, fourth and fifth all-time in the 5,000 at PSU, respectively, while Grzeda and Landstrom rank eighth and ninth.

Freshmen Ben Richardson, sophomore Sheldon Prince, freshman Nathan Fleck and sophomore Neil Seibert also combined to place eighth in the men's distance medley relay, finishing in 10:16.83. The team's time ranks third all-time in the event at Portland State, and would have ranked atop the Big Sky entering the weekend.

Freshman Mitchell Gable and senior Nevin Lewis started competition in the heptathlon Friday, the first combined event competition in each athlete's PSU career. Gable stands 10th after the first day of the competition, having set personal bests in all four events. Lewis, meanwhile, did not finish the first day of competition after competing in the first two events.

The heptathlon will conclude with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters tomorrow, Feb. 1. Both Viking teams will also compete in the bulk of their events tomorrow, with running events starting at 9:15 a.m. (PT) with the men's 3,000 meters, and field events starting at 10 a.m. (PT) with the women's long jump.
