Viking Women Claim Team Title at Beaver Classic Amid Historic Finishes for Both XC Teams

RESULTS

CORVALLIS, Ore. — The Portland State women's cross country team ended the regular season in style at the Beaver Classic Friday, as the Vikings placed five runners in the top 18 to claim the women's team title at the meet, highlighting historic finishes for the both the Viking men and women at the meet at Avery Park.

The Vikings women won the team title with 43 total points, 18 points ahead of the second-place team at the meet, the University of Portland with 61. The team title sets a new best for the Viking women at the meet, while the Portland State men also recorded their best finish in program history at the meet, placing third out of 10 teams in a stacked men's field.

"Today's results are a testament to the patience and progression of the program," PSU head coach Ronnye Harrison said. "With this being our last meet before the Big Sky meet, having a win like this is a great final prep. It provides a measure of confidence that will have great value for us at the conference championships."

Senior Camelia Mayfield and junior Amanda Boman paced the Viking women to their win Friday, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Mayfield finished the 6,000-meter women's race in 22:07.09, while Boman crossed the line in 22:12.5. Boman's time represents a huge improvement over her first 6K time for the Vikings, when she finished in 24:47 at the season-opening Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 5, more than two and a half minutes slower than her time Friday

More important to the team win, however, was the tight grouping of the Vikings' second group of runners, who all finished within 30 seconds of each other. Sophomore Cheryn Trapp led the second group with her 11th-place finish in 22:28.2, while freshman Sarah Medved finished right behind Trapp at 12th overall in 22:39.4. Sophomore Maggie Coleman rounded out the Vikings' top five with her 18th-place finish in 22:56.1.

Trapp's and Medved's times represent seasonal bests for each runner in 6K races, beating their times from the Bill Dellinger Invitational at the start of the season. Medved shaved over a minute off her time from the Bill Dellinger meet, where she finished in 23:42, well behind her time Friday.

Junior Katie Hendricks, redshirt junior Keikoanne Hollins and senior Erica Contos all also competed for the Viking women at the meet, as they finished 33rd, 43rd and 44th overall, respectively. Hendricks finished the course in 23:51.9, while Hollins and Contos finished in 24:19.4 and 24:27.2, respectively. Hollins was racing in her first meet since the season-opening Bill Dellinger meet, as she returns from injury just in time for the post-season meets.

Freshman Alejandro Cisneros, meanwhile, led the Portland State men to their third-place finish in the 8,000-meter men's race, placing sixth overall in 26:04.3. The top finish for Cisneros marks the second time the freshman has led the Vikings at a meet this season, after he led Portland State men at the Bill Dellinger meet at the start of the season.

Besides Cisneros, redshirt junior T-Roy Brown finished as the Vikings' second runner, placing 15th overall in 26:21.9, just a few seconds ahead of teammate John Talik, who finished as the Vikings' third runner in 26:24.9, placing him 18th overall.

Senior Jake Schwartz and junior Neil Seibert, meanwhile, led the Vikings' second group of runners, placing within four spots of each other at 37th and 40th overall, respectively. Schwartz finished the course in 27:13.0, eight seconds ahead of Seibert, who crossed the line in 27:21.0.

The Viking men's four remaining freshman also ran at the meet for the Vikings with Ricardo Castillo leading the group with his 53rd-place finish in 27:47.4. Justin Wikler finished behind Castillo at 57th overall in 27:53.6, while Jacob Hicks finished behind him at 63rd overall in 28:08.9. Ethan Cotton, meanwhile, placed 99th overall in 29:58.9.

The Vikings' success at the Beaver Classic Friday continues a trend of historic success for both the Viking men's and women's programs this season. Before the Beaver Classic Friday, the Viking men and women each recorded their first dual wins in close to 10 years at the Viking XC Classic on Oct. 4, the team's last meet before Friday.

"What we saw today at the Beaver Classic was the fruition of a lot of deliberated and focused work by these men and women," PSU assistant coach in charge of distances Jonathan Marcus said. "The fitness is there. The competitiveness is there. The confidence is there. Now the mission is to execute at the Big Sky conference championships next week, and to focus on running our own race exactly as we did today."

The Vikings will run at the Big Sky Championship meet Saturday, Nov. 1, in Grand Forks, N.D. The men will open the meet with their race at 12:30 p.m. (CT), while the women will follow with their race at 1:45 p.m. (CT).
