Viking Women Place 17th at NCAA West Regional, Tie Second-Best Finish in Program History

STANFORD, Calif. — Coming off a record performance at the Big Sky Championships two weekends ago, the Portland State women's cross country team followed it up with one of their best performances in program history at the NCAA West Regional Friday, placing 17th out of 34 teams with 456 points.

The 17th-place finish ties the second-best finish by the Vikings at the meet, and marks the team's best finish at regionals since 2003. Additionally, the team's 456 points at the meet this season ranks as the third-lowest total in program history at the regional meet, only ranking behind the 375 points the team scored in 2002 and the 410 points the team scored in 1999.

"Our results today were consistent with the progress that we have been making all season long," PSU head coach Ronnye Harrison said.

Junior Amanda Boman led the Viking women at the regional, as she finished the 6,000-meter women's race 49th overall in 21:23.6. Boman's time represents a seasonal-best 6K time by close to 50 seconds for the junior, and ranks Boman fifth all-time at Portland State under all conditions in the cross country 6,000-meters.

Sophomore Cheryn Trapp also cracked 22 minutes for the Vikings, as she placed 64th overall in 21:34.8. Trapp's time beats her old best for a cross country 6K by over 30 seconds, and moves her up to sixth all-time in the cross country 6K at Portland State.

"The women showed they can hold their own against a high quality field," PSU assistant coach in charge of distances Jonathan Marcus said. "To have two ladies finish in the top 70 at this meet is a big step forward for the program. Everyone can take pride in today's results for the women."

Freshman Sarah Medved and senior Camelia Mayfield, meanwhile, placed within four seconds of each other as the Vikings' third and fourth runners, respectively, while sophomore Maggie Coleman rounded out the team's top five. Medved placed 108th overall in 22:13.3, just ahead of Mayfield, who placed 112th overall in 22:17.5, while Coleman placed 129th overall in 22:30.3.

Medved's and Coleman's times each rank as seasonal bests for the young Vikings, as Medved beat her old seasonal best by more than 25 seconds with her time Friday, while Coleman beat her old seasonal best by over 20 seconds.

Redshirt junior Keikoanne Hollins, who battled an injury all season, also raced at the meet for the Vikings, placing 207th overall in 23:58.6.

The Viking men, meanwhile, placed 27th as a team with 741 points at the NCAA West Regional Friday.

The Vikings' lead pack of junior John Talik, freshman Alejandro Cisneros and redshirt junior T-Roy Brown led the Vikings again at the meet, as they finished the 10,000-meter men's course within six seconds of each other at 132nd, 135th and 140th overall, respectively.

Talik led the lead pack with his time of 32:12.2, bettering his time at regionals last season by over two minutes, and beating his outdoor track personal best in the 10,000 meters by more than 45 seconds. Talik's time also moves him up to fifth all-time in the cross country 10K at Portland State, and would rank him in the top 10 at Portland State in the outdoor track 10,000 meters.

Cisneros would also have moved into the top 10 in the outdoor track 10,000 meters with his time Friday, as he finished in 32:16.3, a time that also ranks him seventh all-time in the cross country 10,000 meters at Portland State. Brown beat his time from last season's NCAA West Regional as well, crossing the line in 32:18.9, more than 15 seconds better than his time from the 2013 meet.

Besides the Vikings' lead three, senior Jake Schwartz placed as the Vikings' fourth runner at 169th overall at the meet, while junior Neil Seibert rounded out the team's top five at 178th overall. Schwartz finished in 32:56.7, over 12 seconds better than his time at the regional meet last season, while Seibert crossed the line in 33:21.9.

Freshman Jacob Hicks also ran for the Viking men at the meet, crossing the line in 34:29.4 to place 189th overall.

"We're still young on the men's team, but today's championship experience will pay dividends as we mature in the coming years," Marcus said. "John did a nice job leading our team today."

The regional meet ends the season for the Viking men and women, as only the top two teams at the meet advance to the NCAA Championships next weekend in Terre Haute, Ind.
