DAY ONE RECAP | DAY TWO RECAP
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Portland State track and field teams set or bettered six Big Sky qualifying marks Saturday, as they wrapped up competition at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge at Hornet Stadium.
The Vikings sprinters accounted for five of the six new or bettered qualifying marks Saturday, and freshman
Genna Settle accounted two of those five, as she lowered her qualifying times in the 100 and 200 meters.
Settle lowered her qualifying time in the 100 to 11.96 seconds, moving her up to ninth all-time at Portland State. Settle also lowered her time in the 200 meters to 24.56 seconds, a time that moves her up to eight all-time at Portland State, and would have ranked her fifth in the conference going into the weekend. Additionally, Settle was the top collegiate runner in the 200 meters Saturday, and was second among collegiate runners in the 100 meters.
Besides Settle, freshman
Baileh Simms hit a new Big Sky qualifying mark in the 100 meters for the Vikings, as she placed fourth overall in the event with a big personal best of 12.06 seconds, .33 seconds faster than her old PR of 12.39 seconds. Freshman
Adia White also set a big new personal best in the 100 meters Saturday, as she finished in 12.18 seconds, .21 seconds faster than her old PR of 12.39 seconds.
Junior
Jazmin Ratcliff, meanwhile, set a seasonal best in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday, as she won the event in 13.94 seconds, .14 seconds faster than her previous best this season of 14.08 seconds.
Sophomore
Sheldon Prince won the 400 meters on the men's side as well, while lowering his Big Sky qualifying time in the event to 47.59 seconds. Prince beat the rest of the 400 field by nearly a full second Saturday, as he finished .95 seconds faster than the No. 2 runner in the field, Kianti Gix of the Auc Elite professional club. Additionally, Prince's time Saturday inches him closer to Anthony Robinson's school record of 47.38 seconds, as he sits just .21 seconds behind Robinson now in second-place all-time at Portland State.
Prince cracked 22 seconds in the 200 meters for the second this season as well, as he finished as the top collegiate runner in 21.87 seconds against a headwind.
The Viking sprinters recorded solid performances in the relays, too, as the PSU women set a seasonal best in the 4x100-meter relay, while the PSU men and women ran their first 4x400-meter relays of the season. Junior
Jasmine Woods, Settle, Simms and Ratcliff ran the 4x100-meter relay in 45.85 seconds, a time that ranks fourth all-time at Portland State, and would have led the Big Sky by .45 seconds going into the weekend. The Viking women's team of junior
Dejuanae Toliver, freshman
Roazena Miller, sophomore
Shannon Petrina and freshman
Whitney Diggs, meanwhile, finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:57.66, a time that would have ranked eighth in the Big Sky going into the weekend. On the other side, sophomore
Christian Wood, sophomore
Mitchell Gable, senior
Nevin Lewis and Prince ran the men's 4x400-meter relay in 3:23.32, a time that would have ranked eighth in the Big Sky going into the weekend.
Elsewhere in the sprints, Toliver set a big personal best in the 200 meters, finishing in 24.97 seconds to beat her old PR of 25.40 seconds, set a the same meet two years ago. Woods set a new personal best in the 200 meters as well, as she finished in 25.00 seconds, beating her old PR of 25.20.
Miller also set a new personal best of 1:05.34 in the 400-meter hurdles, while sophomore
Michael Kubisiak cracked 11 seconds in the 100 meters for the second time this season, as he placed third in 10.93 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Vikings also performed well over the middle distances Saturday, highlighted by senior
Sarah Dean's win in the 1,500 meters in 4:28.50. Dean's time lowers her Big Sky-qualifying time in the event, and sets a new personal best for the senior by over three seconds. The time also moves Dean up to fourth all-time in the 1,500 meters at Portland State, and would have given her the Big Sky lead in the event by nearly three full seconds going into the weekend.
Dean also placed third in the 800 meters Saturday with a time of 2:13.75. Junior
Erica Contos just missed out on qualifying in the 800 meters, as she ran a personal-best 2:14.49 Saturday, just .49 seconds behind the Big Sky qualifying mark of 2:14.00.
Freshman
Maggie Coleman also set a new personal best in the 1,500 meters, as she crossed the line in 4:50.77 to beat her old best of 4:54.61.
Sophomores
T-Roy Brown and
Neil Seibert, meanwhile, set new personal bests in the men's 800 meters with their times of 1:55.50 and 1:57.05, respectively.
In the field, freshman
Gifton Okoronkwo, the Big Sky champion in the indoor triple jump, made his outdoor debut in the event with a fourth-place finish and a mark of 44-04.00 (13.51m). Okoronkwo's mark Saturday moves him up to 10th all-time at Portland State, and would have ranked him seventh in the Big Sky going into the weekend. Sophomore
Tyson Stipic also set a new personal best in the triple jump for a third time this season, as he jumped 44-02.00 (13.46m) Saturday.
Overall as a team, the Viking women placed fourth with 115 points in the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge team competition. The Viking men, meanwhile, placed third as a team with 70 points.
The Portland State men and women track and field teams will return to action next weekend at the Oregon Relays. The meet will kick off Friday, April 18, and conclude Saturday, April 19, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
