OGDEN, Utah — Portland State decathlete
Nevin Lewis has been named the Big Sky Co-Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Lewis earned the award after winning the decathlon Friday at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge. Lewis, who was debuting in the decathlon after a four-year football career at Portland State, won the event with 7,268 points, a total that ranks him second all-time at Portland State, behind only former NCAA All-American Nick Trubachik.
Lewis' score of 7,268 points leads the Big Sky in the decathlon by 600 points this season, and ranks him 15th in the nation. At 15th in the NCAA, Lewis has the potential to be the Vikings' third athlete in the combined events to qualify for nationals in the past five seasons. Trubachik qualified for the decathlon in 2010, while
Joenisha Vinson qualified for the heptathlon in 2013. The top 24 declared student-athletes in the decathlon will qualify for nationals.
Additionally, Lewis' Big Sky Athlete of the Week honor comes as part of resurgent 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons for the Portland State men's track and field program. The Portland State men recorded their second-best finish at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in March, while Lewis becomes the Viking men's first Big Sky Athlete of the Week since 2011 with his honor Tuesday.
Lewis and the rest of the Portland State track and field program returns to action at the Oregon Relays this Friday and Saturday, April 18-19, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
