EUGENE, Ore. — The Portland State men's and women's track and field teams set 11 new seasonal bests Friday at the first day of the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.
Four of the Vikings' five runners in the women's 200 set seasonal bests Friday, led by freshman
Genna Settle, who bettered her personal best from a week ago while finishing second overall in 24.53 seconds. Behind Settle, junior
Jazmin Ratcliff, freshman
Whitney Diggs and junior
Jasmine Woods finished third, fourth and fifth overall, respectively, while Ratcliff and Woods each set new PSU personal bests in the event. Ratcliff finished in 24.66 seconds to edge her old personal best by .02 seconds, while Woods finished in 24.94 to break her personal best in the 200 for a second straight week.
Ratcliff's personal best of 24.66 qualifies her for the Big Sky meet in the 200 meters, and would have moved her up to ninth in the conference going into the weekend. Woods, meanwhile, would have jumped up to 11th in the Big Sky with her time of 24.94.
Junior
Nettie Wayne also set a new PSU personal best in the race Friday, as she finished 16th overall in 26.05.
Two of the three Vikings' runners in the women's 400-meter hurdles set new seasonal bests as well, led by freshman
CeCelia Jackson, who finished fourth overall in 1:01.71. Jackson's time moves her up to No. 2 all-time in the 400-meter hurdles at Portland State, just .19 seconds behind Ashley Frazier's school record of 1:01.52, set during the 2012 outdoor season. Jackson's time would have also ranked her fifth in the Big Sky going into the weekend. Sophomore
Shannon Petrina, meanwhile, set a new seasonal best of 1:12.12 in the 400-meter hurdles Friday, while freshman
Roazena Miller just missed out on a seasonal best with her time of 1:05.39, only .05 seconds behind the 1:05.34 she ran last week at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge.
On the men's side of the sprints, sophomore
Sheldon Prince set a new personal best in the 200 meters while finishing third overall in a wind-aided 21.50 seconds. Prince's time moves him up to fourth all-time in the 200 at Portland State, and would have ranked him second in the Big Sky going into the weekend.
In the distances, freshman
Maggie Coleman set a 40-second personal best in her PSU debut in the 5,000 meters Friday, as she placed eighth in the event in 17:58.79. Fellow freshman
Ben Richardson also set a 14-second PR in the men's 1,500 meters with his time of 4:10.16, while sophomore
T-Roy Brown won his section of the men's 1,500 meters in 3:58.30.
Junior
Jake Schwartz and sophomore Jonathan Talik also each set big personal bests in the men's 10,000 meters, with Schwartz finishing second in 32:38.28 and Talik finishing third in 32:56.80. Schwartz's time beat his old personal best by close to two minutes, while Talik's time beat his old PR by over two minutes and seven seconds. Schwartz's time ranks him 10th all-time in the 10,000 meters at Portland State as well, and would have moved him up to sixth in the Big Sky this season in the event, just ahead of Talik, who would have ranked seventh.
Freshman
Nathan Fleck came close to beating his personal best in the 800 meters, too, as he finished in 1:53.16, just behind the 1:52.85 he ran at the Stanford Invitational earlier this season.
Additionally, freshman
Baileh Simms cracked 19 feet in the long jump for a second time this season, but just missed out on setting a new personal best. Simms placed second in the event with a jump of 19-02.00 (5.84m), just 2.25 inches behind the 19-04.25 (5.90m) she jumped at the Victor Lopez Classic earlier this season.
