RESULTSDAY ONE RECAPEUGENE, Ore. — For the second straight day, the Portland State men's and women's track and field teams set a bevy of seasonal bests at the Oregon Relays, with the team setting 14 new seasonal bests Saturday after 11 seasonal bests Friday at Hayward Field.
Five athletes set new seasonal bests in the women's 100 meters Saturday, a day after four athletes set new seasonal bests in the women's 200 meters Friday. Junior
Jasmine Woods led the Vikings' performers in the 100 meters, as she placed second overall in the event with a huge personal best of 11.89 seconds. Woods' time beats her old personal best of 12.06 by .17 seconds, and moves her up to ninth all-time in the 100 meters at Portland State.
Freshman
Genna Settle and junior
Jazmin Ratcliff followed Woods with matching personal bests of 11.93 seconds while placing third and fourth in the event, respectively. The 11.93 seconds qualified Ratcliff for the Big Sky meet in the 100 meters, while it lowered Settle's Big Sky qualifying time in the event for a second straight week.
Freshman
Baileh Simms also lowered her Big Sky qualifying time while placing sixth in 11.99 seconds Saturday, while junior
Nettie Wayne set a new personal best while placing 14th in 12.49 seconds.
With their times Saturday, Woods, Settle, Ratcliff and Simms would have ranked second, tied for fourth and seventh in the Big Sky going into the weekend.
Senior
Sarah Dean qualified for the Big Sky meet in the women's 5,000 meters, meanwhile, as she finished fourth in the top section of the event in 16:43.80. Dean's time ranks her third all-time in the women's 5,000 meters at Portland State, and has now entered the top ten all-time at PSU in the 800, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters this season. Dean has run Big Sky qualifying times in the 800, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters as well, and led the Big Sky in the 800 and 1,500 going into the weekend. Dean also ranked second in the 10,000 last week, and would have ranked third in the 5,000 with her time Saturday.
Elsewhere in the sprints, junior
Dejuanae Toliver, sophomore
Shannon Petrina and freshman
Roazena Miller set new personal bests in the 400 meters, with Toliver finishing fifth in 56.87 seconds, Petrina finishing 11th in 58.21 seconds and Miller finishing 14th in 1:00.03. Additionally, freshman
CeCelia Jackson won the 100-meter hurdles in a non-decathlon personal best of 13.95 seconds.
On the men's side, sophomore
Sheldon Prince set a new personal best in the men's 100 meters Saturday, as he cracked 11 seconds for the first time this season while finishing fifth overall in 10.95 seconds. Sophomore
Kevin Robinson also set a new personal best in the 110-meter hurdles while placing ninth in 15.24 seconds.
Meanwhile, in the throws, sophomore
Sydney Johnson and seniors
Shae Carson and
Allison Burkett set or tied seasonal bests in the discus and javelin. Johnson came within eight inches of her school record in the discus while placing second in the event with a throw of 155-11 (47.53m). Johnson's throw Saturday would have set the school record at PSU by over five feet if she did not already hold the record, while the throw would have also ranked her fifth in the Big Sky this season going into the weekend. Carson also tied her seasonal best in the discus Saturday, as she placed 10th in the event in 137-09 (38.93m).
Burkett, meanwhile, set a new seasonal best in the javelin, as she placed seventh with a throw of 135-08 (41.35m).
The Viking track and field teams will take a week off following the Oregon Relays before returning to action at the Pacific Twilight meet on May 2-3.
