EUGENE, Ore. — Senior
Sarah Dean broke the school record in the outdoor 1,500 meters Friday, as the Portland State track and field teams closed the regular season at the Oregon Twilight meet at Hayward Field.
Â
Dean ran the 1,500 in 4:22.30 Friday, setting over a six-second personal best in the event and breaking
Bianca Martin's school record of 4:23.89, set at last season's Stanford Invitational. Dean has now broken two school records in 2014, as she also set the mark in the indoor mile during the indoor season.
Â
Additionally, Dean's time moves her into position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary meet in the 1,500 meters, as she now ranks 31st in the NCAA West region, well within the group of 48 runners who will qualify. Dean's time also would have led the Big Sky by over two and a half seconds going into the weekend.
Â
Besides Dean, four Vikings won their events at the meet Friday.
Â
Junior
Jasmine Woods led a 1-2-3 PSU finish in the women's 100 meters, as she won the event in 12.06 seconds amid a heavy rain. Behind her, junior
Jazmin Ratcliff finished second in the 100 meters in 12.18 seconds, while freshman
Genna Settle finished third in 12.21 seconds.
Â
Ratcliff also won the 100-meter hurdles Friday, as she was the only runner to crack 14 seconds amid the rainy conditions, finishing in 13.88 seconds. Ratcliff has now cracked 14 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles in three straight meets going into next week's Big Sky Championships.
Â
Sophomore
Sheldon Prince and freshman
Baileh Simms, meanwhile, won the men's 400 and women's long jump, respectively, Friday. Prince won the men's 400 in 48.12 seconds, while Simms won the women's long jump with a mark of 19-00.50 (5.80m). Simms' jump marks the fourth time she has cleared 19 feet in the long jump this season.
Â
Elsewhere, sophomore
Rockwell Tufty set a new seasonal best in the high jump, as he cleared 6-08.25 (2.04m) at the meet. Tufty made three attempts at what would have been a school-record 6-10.25 (2.08m) as well, but just clipped the bar on all three attempts. As it stands, Tufty's jump Friday puts him alone in seventh place in the Big Sky going into the conference meet.
Â
Sophomore
Kevin Robinson also lowered his personal best in the 110-meter hurdles for the third straight meet, as he finished fourth in the event in 15.16 seconds.
Â
The Vikings now turn attention to the Big Sky Championships, which begin Wednesday, May 14, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
