Portland State men's basketball coach Tyler Geving has announced the signing of transfer Calaen Robinson to an athletic aid agreement for the 2014-15 year.
Robinson, a transfer from Arizona State, will redshirt the 2014-15 season due to his transfer status, then compete in 2015-16 as a junior for the Vikings.
Robinson, a 6-2, 190-pound guard, prepped at Tempe, AZ's Corona Del Sol High School. He led the Aztecs to a 32-1 record his senior season, winning the Division I state championship. Robinson averaged 18.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.4 steals and was named the East Valley Tribune's Player of the Year. He was an All-State selection as a junior and a senior.
Robinson was ranked by ESPN as the 19th-best point guard in the country and 20th best player overall in the west his senior year.
In 2013-14, Robinson played for the Sun Devils, competing in 20 games, averaging 1.6 points and 1.1 assists in 6.2 minutes per game. He scored a season-high 11 points with four assists against Miami of Ohio, and had seven points and five assists against Grambling State.
"We're expecting Calaen to have a big impact on our team with us losing some senior guards after next year," said Geving. "We think he has the potential to be an All-League guard the Big Sky. He is very talented on the offensive end as a guy that can make shots and create for others on the court."
"(Assistant) Coach (Jase) Coburn has built a great relationship with Calaen during the recruiting process. Jase has known Calaen for a number of years through his Arizona recruiting ties. That played a big part in Calaen's decision-making," said Geving.
Robinson is the third student-athlete to sign with the Vikings this spring. PSU has nine returning letterwinners, three returning starters and also has three redshirts returning in 2014-15.
The Vikings come off a 17-15 season, 11-9 in the Big Sky. PSU reached the Big Sky Tournament semifinals and earned a bid to the Collegeinsider.com post-season tournament.
Geving expects to sign at least one more student-athlete this spring.
