RESULTS - DAY TWO ONLYRECAPS - DAY ONEFLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Senior
Nevin Lewis placed second in the decathlon with 7,235 points at the Big Sky Championships Thursday at Lumberjack Stadium, earning him All-Big Sky honors in the event.
Â
Lewis' score does not better the 7,268 points he scored in the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge in April, however, meaning he'll have to wait and see if he qualifies for the NCAA National Championships. Lewis currently ranks 23rd in the nation with the top 24 declared student-athletes in the decathlon qualifying for the meet. The qualifying period ends at midnight Sunday, May 18.
Â
Lewis recorded his score Thursday behind decathlon personal bests in the first three events of the day.
Â
Lewis opened with a decathlon personal best of 15.84 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, and then won the discus with an overall personal-best throw of 136-10 (41.71m).
Â
Lewis' throw gave him a temporary 42-point lead over Montana State's Jeff Mohl in the decathlon competition, but Mohl retook the lead in the pole vault, even as Lewis set another decathlon personal best. Lewis cleared 14-05.25 (4.40m) in the pole vault, giving him 6,053 points to that point of the competition.
Â
Lewis had the chance to make up ground in the discus, one of Mohl's weaker events, but Mohl stayed closed enough to Lewis in the event to essentially wrap up the win before the closing 1,500 meters. Lewis, meanwhile, closed the decathlon with a throw of 164-09 (50.22m) in the discus, placing him second in the event, and finished things with a time of 4:54.84 in the 1,500 meters.
Â
Besides Lewis, freshman
CeCelia Jackson closed the heptathlon with personal bests in all three events Thursday, and placed fifth in the competition with 4,864 points. Jackson's point total gives her the USATF Junior National qualifying standard in the heptathlon, and moves her up to fifth all-time in the event at Portland State.
Â
Jackson started the second day of the heptathlon with a big personal best of 18-05.25 (5.62m) in the long jump, more than six inches better than her mark in the long jump at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge. Jackson followed that with another personal best in her weakest event, as she threw 63-03 (19.28m) in the javelin, six feet better than her mark at the Mondo meet.
Â
Jackson then closed the heptathlon with a time of 2:30.74 in the 800 meters, giving her the junior national qualifying standard.
Â
Also Thursday, sophomore
Kevin Robinson recorded a personal-best score of 5,718 points in the decathlon while placing ninth in the event for the Vikings. Robinson recorded the new best behind overall personal bests in the discus, pole vault and javelin. Robinson threw 87-02 (26.57m) in the discus, the second event of the day, and then followed that up with a mark of 10-06.00 (3.20m) in the pole vault and a throw of 135-07 (41.33m) in the javelin.
Â
The rest of the Big Sky Championships start tomorrow, Friday, May 16.
