Simms Wins Big Sky Title in Long Jump; Ratcliff Breaks Three Records in Prelims of 100m Hurdles

DAY THREE RESULTS
RECAPS - DAY ONE | DAY TWO

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. —
Freshman Baileh Simms won the Big Sky title in the women's long jump, and junior Jazmin Ratcliff broke three records in the preliminaries of the women's 100-meter hurdles, as the Portland State track and field teams competed in the third day of the Big Sky Championships Friday at Lumberjack Stadium.

Simms won her title in the long jump with a jump of 19-05.25 (5.92m) on her second attempt of the day. Simms beat Northern Arizona's Alexis Clay by 1.25 inches for the title, exacting a bit of revenge on Clay, who beat Simms by two inches in the long jump at the Big Sky Indoor Championships, where the two went 1-2 as well.

"It felt pretty good," Simms said of her win in the long jump. "I was hoping to go out there and reach my goals. One of my goals was to win today and the other was getting six meters (the USATF Junior National qualifying standard). I didn't get that but I'm just going to keep trying so I can get into nationals."

The Vikings have now won two straight Big Sky titles in the outdoor women's long jump, as Simms' victory Friday follows Joenisha Vinson's win in the event last season. Additionally, Simms moves into a tie for fourth all-time at Portland State with her winning mark in the long jump.

Meanwhile, the majority of the Vikings raced in preliminary heats Friday in preparation for finals on Saturday.

Ratcliff led the Vikings within the preliminary races, as she posted the top qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles while blowing away the school, conference and championship records in the event in a blazing 13.26 seconds. Ratcliff's time broke Sacramento State's Nancy Searcy's 2007 conference record of 13.35 seconds, and broke Weber State's Nsa Henshaw's 16-year-old championship record of 13.35 seconds as well. Ratcliff moved past freshman CeCelia Jackson on the PSU list, too, after Jackson set the new mark at 13.53 seconds just two days before during the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles.

Ratcliff's time also led all other qualifying times Friday by more than two-tenths of a second, and would have ranked her tied for 11th on the NCAA Division I West Outdoor Qualifying list going into the day.

Ratcliff was also one of three PSU athletes to qualify for the finals of the women's 100 meters, as freshman Genna Settle, Ratcliff and junior Jasmine Woods qualified in times of 11.54, 11.61 and 11.62 seconds, respectively.

Woods and Settle, meanwhile, qualified with freshman Whitney Diggs in the women's 200 meters, with Woods qualifying in a personal-best 24.34 seconds despite running into a stiff headwind. Woods' time moves her up to fifth all-time in the event at Portland State, just ahead of Settle, who ranks sixth after running 24.35 seconds at the OSU High Performance meet earlier this season.

Jackson also qualified in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles Friday, running 13.57 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, and 1:01.57 in the 400-meter hurdles. Jackson's time in the 400-meter hurdles set a new personal best for the freshman, and moved her within just five-hundredths of a second within Ashley Frazier's 2012 school record of 1:01.52.

On the men's side, sophomore Sheldon Prince qualified in the men's 200 and 400 meters, running the 200 in 21.69 seconds, and the 400 in 47.67 seconds. Freshman Mitchell Gable also set a new personal best in the 400 meters Friday, finishing in 48.65 seconds.

Additionally, sophomore Michael Kubisiak advanced in the 100 meters with a personal best of 10.65 seconds. Kubisiak's time moves him up third all-time in the event at Portland State.

The Vikings also competed in a couple other finals Friday, with sophomore T-Roy Brown scoring for the men's team with an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:20.53.

Sophomore Sydney Johnson, meanwhile, just missed out on scoring for the women's team, as she placed ninth in the discus with a throw of 146-02 (44.56m).

The Vikings conclude the Big Sky Championships tomorrow, Saturday, with field events starting at 10:30 a.m. (PT) for the Vikings with the men's high jump. The team opens events on the track at 12:10 p.m. (PT) with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
