SACRAMENTO, Calif. — With overall personal bests in two of the three events Thursday, freshman
CeCelia Jackson totaled 4,839 points in the heptathlon and placed seventh at the USATF Junior Outdoor Combined Events Championships at Hornet Stadium.
Â
Jackson's total falls short of the 4,864 points she scored at the Big Sky Championships, but marks the second straight time she has surpassed the 4,800-point plateau — the qualifying mark to get into the USATF Junior meet — in the event. Jackson also beat the place she came into the meet with, as she had ranked 11th among the heptathlon field going into the meet.
Â
Jackson bookended her day with her two personal bests in the long jump and 800 meters. Jackson opened the second day of the heptathlon with a jump of 18-06.50 (5.65m) in the long jump, placing her fourth in the event and moving her into a tie for ninth all-time in the long jump at Portland State.
Â
Jackson then rebounded after a tough mark in the javelin to close the heptathlon with a strong time in the 800 meters. Jackson ran the 800 in 2:28.89, nearly two full seconds faster than her previous best in the event.
Â
Overall, Jackson finished the USATF Junior heptathlon with four personal bests in the seven events (shot put, 200m, long jump and 800m).
Â
Jackson has also declared for the 100- and 400-meter hurdles at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., which will take place July 5-6 at Hayward Field. Fellow PSU freshmen
Whitney Diggs (women's 200m, 400m),
Baileh Simms (women's long jump) and
Gifton Okoronkwo (men's triple jump) have also qualified or been accepted to compete in the meet.
