SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Freshman
CeCelia Jackson opened the first day of the heptathlon at the USATF Junior Outdoor Combined Events Championships with a personal-best day-one score of 3,181 points Wednesday at Hornet Stadium.
Â
Jackson's score puts her in fourth place after the first day, 221 points behind the first-day leader Ashlee Moore of Elite Athletics, who totaled 3,402 points.
Â
Jackson closed the first day of the heptathlon strongly with overall personal bests in the shot put and 200 meters. Jackson threw 34-02.25 (10.42m) in the shot put, close to 15 inches further than her previous personal best in the event. Jackson then was one of only four runners to crack 25 seconds in the closing 200 meters, as she placed third in the event in 24.95 seconds.
Â
Jackson opened the day strongly, too, recording second- and seventh-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, respectively. Jackson ran the 100-meter hurdles in 13.87 seconds, the third time this season she's opened a heptathlon with a sub-13.90-second performance in the 100-meter hurdles. Jackson's time in the 100-meter hurdles gave her 997 points in the event alone, and she upped that to 1,733 points with a clearance of 5-03.00 (1.60m) in the high jump.
Â
Jackson's first-day total surpasses her totals at her two previous heptathlon competitions this season, as totaled 3,111 points at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge in April, and had 3,169 points after the first day of the heptathlon at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in May.
Â
Jackson came into the event ranked 11th among the heptathlon field, but can beat that rank with a strong finish to the competition Thursday. The second day of the heptathlon opens with the long jump at 10:30 a.m. (PT). The key for Jackson will be the javelin, her weakest event at her two previous heptathlons, which will start at 12:10 p.m. (PT). The heptathlon will then close with the 800 meters at 2 p.m. (PT).
