RESULTS
EUGENE, Ore. — Portland State track and field freshman
CeCelia Jackson came within one-hundredth of a second of medaling in the women's 100-meter hurdles at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships Sunday, as Jackson and three other Vikings wrapped competition at the junior national meet at Hayward Field.
Â
Jackson finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.58 seconds, .01 seconds behind third-place finisher Skylar Ross-Ransom of Florida. Jackson's time still ranks as her fourth-fastest time in the event this season, however, and beat her time of 13.68 seconds in the first round of the event Saturday.
Â
Jackson also competed in the finals of the women's 400-meter hurdles Sunday, placing seventh in 1:01.00. Jackson's time in the finals came after her fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles earlier in the day, but still would have broken the school record in the 400-meter hurdles if Jackson had not broken the record the day before with her time of 59.53 seconds in the first round of the event.
Â
Meanwhile, three other Vikings competed at the national meet Sunday, including freshman
Gifton Okoronkwo of the PSU men's track and field team, who placed 12th in the men's triple jump with a seasonal-best mark of 46-07.50 (14.21m). Okoronkwo's jump, which came on his first attempt of the day, vaults him to third on the all-time list in the triple jump at Portland State, and within two feet of Don Hall's 1973 school record of 48-06.00 (14.78m).
Â
Besides Okoronkwo, freshman
Whitney Diggs competed in two events Sunday, doubling in the first round of the women's 200 meters and the finals of the women's 400 meters. Diggs opened her day with the first round of the 200 meters, placing 10th in the event in 24.76 seconds. Diggs then returned to the track 80 minutes later and placed eighth in the finals of the 400 meters in 55.29 seconds.

Freshman
Baileh Simms also placed 11th in the women's long jump with a wind-aided jump of 19-00.00 (5.79m) on her first attempt of the day. Simms surpassed 18-06 on her next two attempts as well, but couldn't move into the top eight to qualify for the finals of the event.
Â
None of the Vikings' finishes at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships qualified them for the IAAF World Junior Championships, consequently ending the outdoor season for the Portland State track and field teams.
