PORTLAND, Ore. — Juniors
Amanda Boman and
T-Roy Brown led the Portland State women's and men's cross country teams Saturday, as the Vikings hosted the Big Sky Triangular Meet at Pier Park.
Â
Both Boman and Brown finished sixth in their respective races, with Boman running the women's 5,000-meter race in 18:13, while Brown finished the men's 8,000-meter race in 26:01.
Â
Boman's finish helped lead the PSU women to tight duals against all three of their opponents Saturday. The Vikings failed to pick up their first dual win since 2005 at the meet, but stayed in their duals with Portland (UP 21, PSU 38), Eastern Washington (EWU 27, PSU 28) and Idaho (UI 23, PSU 32).
Â
The Viking men also faired well in their duals, but fell 22-37 to Idaho and 19-38 to Eastern Washington.
Â
"I think the team did well," PSU head coach
Ronnye Harrison said. "We're still working on rhythm and having the athletes run together, but I think they did well on a pretty tough course."
Â
The Viking women can take particular pride in their one-point loss in their dual with Eastern Washington, as the Eagles were picked to finish third in the Big Sky during the preseason.
Â
Boman helped lead the Vikings to their good result against the Eagles, as set a lifetime PR in the 5K across both the cross country and track and field disciplines with her time of 18:13 in the women's race. Boman's time also completes a dramatic turnaround for the junior transfer, after she finished last in a field of 46 runners at the season-opening Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene.
Â
"Amanda had a complete 180," assistant track and field and cross country coach
Jonathan Marcus said. "In her first meet at Dellinger, bless her heart, she was really nervous, had a lot of anxiety and finished dead last.
Â
"In workouts, we knew that wasn't the case, though. She came in really fit. She's been PRing everything she's run all summer, and finally today, it came together. It's exciting for her to see that."
Â
Besides Boman, senior
Camelia Mayfield finished as the Vikings' second runner, as she cracked the top 10 to finish ninth overall in 18:23. Freshman
Sarah Medved then followed Mayfield as the Vikings' third runner, finishing 14th overall in 18:47, while sophomores
Cheryn Trapp and
Maggie Coleman finished back-to-back at 19th and 20th overall, respectively, to round out the Viking women's top five. Trapp finished the 5K course in 19:07, while Coleman finished in 19:11.
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Olivia Loveland, junior
Katherine Hendricks and sophomore
Kennedy Martin also competed for the Vikings at the meet, as they finished 30th, 31st and 35th, respectively, in times of 20:44, 20:47 and 22:24. Hendricks' time represents an improvement over her time two years ago on a similar course at the Pier Park Invitational, hosted by the University of Portland.
Â
Meanwhile, Brown used a strong final push to move up in the field and lead the Viking men with his sixth-place finish in 26:01.
Â
"The first, probably, 3K of the race went out pretty easy and it felt really good, and then it just all of a sudden started getting really hard and I think everyone started feeling it and the race kind of stretched out," Brown said. "It was really just the middle 4K was a lot of hurt, and at the end I saw coach Marcus with 800 meters to go and he said, 'you got to go,' and so I tried to pick it up and sprint it into the finish."
Â
Besides Brown, junior
John Talik led the Vikings for much of the race and finished ninth overall in 26:13. Freshman
Alejandro Cisneros also cracked the top 10 for the Vikings, as he finished 10th in 26:17.
Â
Additionally, junior
Neil Seibert, senior
Jake Schwartz and sophomore
Nathan Fleck finished as a pack at 17th, 18th and 19th overall in times of 26:42, 26:47 and 27:02, respectively. Schwartz's time came in his first race of the season, as the senior continues to work his way back from an injury.
Â
"I'm really pleased with Jake," Marcus said. "He's been battling a strained calf for the past two months and he was able to battle that back, lead the freshmen pack for a little bit and then rally to become our fifth runner today."
Â
Sophomore
Ben Richardson also finished as the Vikings' seventh runner, as he placed 23rd overall in 27:31, just ahead of freshman teammate
Ricardo Castillo, who placed 24th overall in 27:36.
Â
Freshmen
Jacob Hicks,
Justin Wikler and
Ethan Cotton also competed at the meet for the Vikings, as they finished 25th, 26th and 28th overall in times of 27:53, 27:57 and 29:11, respectively.
Â
Overall, six of the Viking men improved their 8K times from two weeks ago at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, including massive improvements from Talik, Hicks and Wikler. Talik and Wikler shaved nearly a minute off their 8K times at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, while Hicks shaved well over two minutes off his time from the previous meet.
Â
The Vikings will return to action Saturday, Oct. 4, when they host their second meet of the regular season in the Viking XC Classic. The Vikings will host the meet at Blue Lake Park in Fairview, Ore., with the men kicking the meet off with a 7,000-meter race at 12 p.m. (PT), while the women run a 4,000-meter race at 1 p.m. (PT).
