DAY ONE RECAP
SEATTLE, Wash. — Senior
Jasmine Woods finished the finals of the 60 meters in a blazingly fast 7.47 seconds Saturday, as she placed third overall in the event to highlight the Portland State track and field teams' final day at the Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor facility.
Â
Woods won her heat of the 60-meter final by .07 seconds, but then got edged by a pair of runners in the second heat. Woods still set a new personal best with her time of 7.47 seconds in the final, while her time also moves within a hundredth of a second of the Big Sky lead in the event. Woods now stands just behind Northern Arizona's Darriel Banks, who leads the Big Sky in the 60 meters with her time of 7.46 seconds earlier this season.
Â
Woods also moves to third all-time in the 60 meters at Portland State with her time Saturday, and moves up to seventh all-time in the Big Sky Conference as well.
Â
Sophomore
Mitchell Gable, meanwhile, set a huge personal best with his time of 49.05 seconds in the men's 400 meters Saturday, just under half of a second better than his previous best of 49.54 seconds, set last week at the Scarlet & White Invitational in Boston. Gable's time just misses the Big Sky auto qualifying mark in the indoor 400, but moves him up to 12th in the conference with the Big Sky meet less than two weeks away.
Â
Additionally, Gable moves up four spots to fourth all-time in the indoor men's 400 meters at Portland State. Gable has steadily moved up the career ranks in the 400 at Portland State throughout the season, as he has set a new personal best in the 400 at four of the five meets in which he's competed this season.
Â
Freshman
Hunter Pfefferkorn also set a big personal best in the men's 400 Saturday, as he finished in 49.42 seconds, more than four-tenths of a second faster than his previous best of 49.83 seconds, set on the same track at the UW Invitational on Jan. 31. Pfefferkorn's time moves him up to eighth all-time at Portland State in the indoor 400, and should put him right on the cusp of finishing in the top 16 of the Big Sky Conference in the event, which would qualify him for the conference indoor meet.
Â
The Vikings also had a large contingent of sprinters set personal bests in the prelims of the women's 60 meters Saturday. Sophomore
Baileh Simms led the group of PR setters in the prelims, as she shaved a tick off her old best with her time of 7.73 seconds Saturday. Simms' time edged her old best by a hundredth of a second, the same margin by which freshman
Ta'mara Richey and sophomore
Akayla Anderson beat their old personal bests, as they finished in 7.81 and 7.94 seconds, respectively.
Â
Senior
Nettie Wayne, meanwhile, beat her previous best by a slightly wider margin with her time of 7.82 seconds Saturday. Wayne has now set a new personal best in the 60 meters five times this season, and has lowered her personal best from the start of the season (8.03 seconds) by more than two full tenths of a second.
Junior
Major Oni also set a huge new personal best in the triple jump, as he jumped 42-11.75 (13.10m) Saturday, beating his old best of 41-07.00 (12.67m) by well over a foot.
Â
The Husky Classic concludes the indoor regular season for the Vikings, who will now prepare for the Big Sky Championships, which are set for Feb. 26-28 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
