FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Senior
Jazmin Ratcliff won her first Big Sky indoor title while reclaiming the school record in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday, as the Portland State women's track and field team finished tied for fourth with 68 total points at the Big Sky Indoor Championships at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome.
Â
Ratcliff won her title in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.33 seconds, edging the 8.34 seconds sophomore teammate
CeCelia Jackson ran in setting the school record in the prelims of the event Friday. Ratcliff had owned the school record since running 8.35 at the Big Sky meet last season, but fell behind Jackson yesterday after Jackson finished as the top qualifier in the conference yesterday.
Â
Jackson's time Friday also knocked Ratcliff off the top of the Big Sky in the 60-meter hurdles where she had been since making her season debut at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 17. Ratcliff won the showdown between her and Jackson in the finals, however, as Jackson ended up fifth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.52 seconds.
Â
Sophomore
Akayla Anderson also bested Jackson in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, as she finished second to Ratcliff in the event Saturday with a huge personal best of 8.40 seconds. Anderson's time Saturday crushed her old best of 8.56 seconds, set in the prelims of the event the day before. Additionally, Anderson's time moves her up to third all-time in the 60-meter hurdles at Portland State, and gives the 2015 Portland State women's team the program's three-best hurdlers in the history of the program in Ratcliff (record holder at 8.33), Jackson (2nd all-time at 8.34) and Anderson (3rd all-time at 8.40).
Â
The Vikings' trio in the 60-meter hurdles also gave the women's team 22 points towards the team's standings at the meet. That was the most points the Vikings earned in a single event at the Big Sky meet, though the Vikings also scored 15 points in the finals of the 60 meters later in the day.
Â
Senior
Jasmine Woods led the Vikings in the 60 meters, as she placed second in 7.41 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second behind Northern Arizona's Darriel Banks, who won the event in 7.40 seconds. Woods' time tied the personal best she set in the prelims of the 60 meters the day before, when she moved up to second all-time in the event at Portland State, behind only former world championships qualifier Geronne Black (7.27 seconds in 2013).
Â
Sophomore
Genna Settle, meanwhile, placed fourth in the 60 meters, three spots ahead of Ratcliff, who placed seventh in the event, as she returned to the track after her win in the 60-meter hurdles. Settle placed fourth in 7.51 seconds, giving her a new personal best in the event and moving her into sole possession of sixth place all-time in the event at Portland State.
Â
Settle also placed third for the Vikings in the finals of the 200 meters, as she finished in 24.18 seconds. Woods, meanwhile, placed fifth in the 200 meters in another personal-best time of 24.27 seconds. Woods had set a personal best with her time of 24.47 in the prelims of the 200 meters Friday, but lowered that with her time in the finals, and now ranks fourth all-time in the event at Portland State.
Â
Settle and Woods gave the Vikings another 10 points with their finishes in the 200 meters, while sophomore
Whitney Diggs gave the Vikings another three points with her sixth-place finish in the finals of the 400 meters. Diggs finished the 400 in 55.35 seconds, just off the seasonal best of 55.22 seconds she ran in the prelims of the event Friday.
Â
The Vikings also scored points in the triple jump, 3,000 meters and 4x400-meter relay Saturday. The Vikings picked up seven points in the triple jump, as freshman
Ta'mara Richey and junior
D'nara Jones placed fourth and seventh in the event, respectively. Richey earned her fourth-place finish with a two-foot personal best of 39-04.00 (11.99m), moving her all the way up to sixth all-time in the event at Portland State. Richey also placed seventh in the long jump Friday, making her the lone Viking to score in two field events at the Big Sky meet this season.
Â
Jones also set a big personal best in the triple jump Saturday, as she jumped 38-06.00 (11.73m) at the meet, beating her old best of 36-10.25 (11.23m) by nearly 20 inches and moving her up to eight all-time at PSU.
Â
Junior
Amanda Boman, meanwhile, picked up a point for the Vikings with her eighth-place finish in the women's 3,000 meters, while the Viking women's 4x400-meter relay team added two points with their seventh-place finish in the final event of the day. Junior
Kris Tollefson, Woods, freshman
Nyalual Beng and Diggs set a seven-second personal best of 3:51.08 for the Vikings in the relay, which ranks fifth all-time in the event at Portland State.
Â
On the men's side, junior
Sheldon Prince scored for the Vikings in the 200 and 400 meters, while sophomore
Nathan Fleck scored in the 800 meters. Fleck finished sixth in the 800 to score three points for the Vikings with his time of 1:55.37, while Prince scored a total of three points between his seventh-place finish in the 400 and his eighth-place finish in the 200.
