OGDEN, Utah — Portland State junior thrower
Sydney Johnson picked up her first career Big Sky women's indoor field athlete of the week honor Tuesday, as the conference announced its weekly awards.
Â
Johnson earned her first career athlete of the week honor after setting a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 41-08.00 (12.70m) on the second day of the UW Invitational Saturday.
Â
Johnson becomes just the second Viking woman to be named indoor field athlete of the week since 2008 with her honor Tuesday, as well as the first Viking women's thrower to be so honored since Caressa Sims won the award in 2008.
Â
Additionally, Johnson's honor marks the third straight week the Viking women have had an athlete win a weekly award from the Big Sky Conference, following
Jazmin Ratcliff's back-to-back honors the past two weeks.
Â
The Portland State track and field teams will next compete Friday at the Crimson Elite Meet in Cambridge, Mass. The Vikings will also compete at the Scarlet & White Invitational Saturday in Boston, Mass.Â
