Viking Sprinters Shine at Rose City Preview, Go 1-2-3 in Four Events

RESULTS

GRESHAM, Ore. —
Portland State sprinters dominated the Vikings' first home meet in 15 years, as the Vikings went 1-2-3 in four different events on the women's side, and won another two events at the Rose City Preview at Earl Klapstein Stadium.

The Vikings' sprinters swept the top three spots in the women's 100 and 200 meters, as well as the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Whitney Diggs also won the 400 meters in a Big Sky-qualifying 55.29 seconds, while the Vikings won the 4x100-meter relay by nearly a full second.

Senior Jasmine Woods led the Vikings' sprinting showcase, as she won the 100 and 200 meters Saturday, and ran the anchor leg of the Vikings' winning 4x100-meter relay. Woods won the 100 and 200 meters for the Vikings while hitting Big Sky qualifying times in each event. Woods won the 100 in 11.88 seconds, close to a quarter of a second better than teammate Genna Settle, who finished second in 12.12 seconds. Settle also finished second to Woods in the 200 meters, as Woods won the event in 24.42 seconds, .28 seconds better than Settle's time of 24.70 seconds.

The Vikings also swept the top three spots in each hurdles event, with senior Jazmin Ratcliff leading a 1-2-3 finish for the Vikings in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday. Ratcliff won the event in 14.20 seconds, while sophomores CeCelia Jackson and Akayla Anderson followed in second and third with their times of 14.40 and 14.42 seconds, respectively. Ratcliff's and Jackson's times Saturday qualify them for the Big Sky meet in the 100-meter hurdles, a season after they finished first and third, respectively, at the 2014 Big Sky Championships.

Jackson also made a strong return to the track for the 400-meter hurdles later in the day, winning the event to lead another 1-2-3 Viking finish. Jackson, the school record-holder in the 400-meter hurdles, won the event in 1:03.32, as she finished ahead of teammates Roazena Miller and Anderson, who finished in 1:04.29 and 1:04.93, respectively.

Additionally, junior Sheldon Prince hit a Big Sky qualifying mark in the men's 400 meters, as he placed third in the event in 48.45 seconds.

Outside of the sprints, the Vikings also had a strong day in the distance events, highlighted by senior Camelia Mayfield's first-place finish in the women's 1,500 meters. Mayfield won the event in a personal-best 4:34.62, a full second ahead of the second-place finisher, and more than five seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

Mayfield also led the Vikings with a fourth-place finish in the women's 3,000 meters, crossing the line in 9:54.24. Mayfield's time placed her a few seconds ahead of teammate Amanda Boman, who placed sixth overall in 10:01.02.

Besides Mayfield, junior Spencer Russell finished second in the men's 800 meters in 1:53.55, narrowly missing the Big Sky qualifying mark of 1:53.30. Sophomore Ben Richardson also set over a two-second personal best in the men's 800 meters, finishing fourth in the event in 1:54.20. Richardson's time crushes his old best in the 800 of 1:56.57, set at the Big Sky Championships last season.

Meanwhile, in the field, freshman Ta'mara Richey led a group of three Vikings that finished in the top four of the women's long jump. Richey placed second overall with a jump of 18-06.75 (5.66m) Saturday, just ahead of teammate Baileh Simms, who placed third in 18-05.00 (5.61m).

Junior Sydney Johnson also set a new personal best while placing second in the shot put with a mark of 41-08.75 (12.72m).

Junior Major Oni, meanwhile, made the rare triple jump/hammer double for the Vikings Saturday, and placed fourth while making his Portland State debut in each event. Oni threw 153-00 (46.63m) in the hammer, moving him up to fifth all-time at Portland State after just one meet competing in the event.

The Vikings will now head out on the road for the rest of their outdoor season, starting with the Texas Relays next weekend in Austin, Texas. The Texas Relays will open competition March 25, and run through to March 28.
