PSU 4x100 Team Sets Meet Record While Vikings Win Four Events at John Knight Twilight

RESULTS

MONMOUTH, Ore. —
The Portland State women's 4x100-meter relay team broke the meet record at the John Knight Twilight Friday, as the team finished in 45.94 seconds at Western Oregon University's McArthur Field.

The Vikings' time beat the old meet record of 47.72, set by Western Oregon in 2011, by close to two seconds, and beat the No. 2 team at the meet Friday by more than 2.25 seconds. Additionally, the Vikings' time Friday marks the second straight meet the Vikings have broken 46 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay, after the Vikings ran a seasonal-best time of 45.65 seconds at last week's Stanford Invitational.

Outside of the relay, the Viking men added three more event-wins for the Vikings at the meet between T-Roy Brown in the 1,500, Andrew Landstrom in the 5,000 and Rockwell Tufty in the high jump.

Brown won the men's 1,500 meters by over three seconds, as he finished in a personal-best 3:54.08, well ahead of the No. 2 runner in the event, Western Oregon's David Ribich at 3:57.19. Brown's time also set a new personal best for the redshirt junior by half a second, beating his old best of 3:54.66, set at last season's San Francisco State Distance Carnival.

Landstrom, meanwhile, blew away the competition in the men's 5,000 meters, as he finished in 15:19.98, close to 16 full seconds ahead of the next finisher in the event, UO Running Club's Ryan Jones, who finished in 15:35.82. Landstrom's time also shaved close to 40 seconds off his time in the 5,000 at the season-opening Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker on March 7.

Tufty followed with his win in the men's high jump, as he cleared 6-06.00 (1.98m), two inches higher than teammate Kevin Robinson, who finished second in the event with his mark of 6-04.00 (1.93m).

Outside of the Vikings' event winners, junior Sydney Johnson set a new seasonal best in the discus, improving her Big Sky qualifying mark from last week's Stanford Invitational with her throw of 151-10 (46.27m) Friday. Johnson's throw moves her up sixth in the Big Sky in the event this season.

A number of Vikings also set new personal bests at the event Friday, starting with sophomore Whitney Diggs and freshman Ta'mara Richey, who set new bests in the women's 100 meters. Diggs made her PSU debut in the 100 meters at the meet, and finished in 12.47 seconds. Richey, meanwhile, shaved a couple of ticks off her time in the 100 at the Rose City Preview on March 21, finishing in 12.72 seconds Friday. Richey also made her PSU debut in the 200 meters Friday, and finished in 26.45.

Freshmen Hunter Pfefferkorn and Cole Nixon also made their PSU debuts in the men's 100 meters, and finished in 11.51 and 11.96 seconds, respectively. Nixon beat his 200-meter time from the Rose City Preview as well, finishing in 23.64 seconds Friday.

Additionally, the Vikings set a number of personal bests in the distances, starting with the men's and women's 800 meters. Junior Kris Tollefson shaved close to two seconds off her old personal best in the 800 with her time of 2:16.68 on the women's side of the event. Sophomore Mitchell Gable and junior Sheldon Prince, meanwhile, each made their PSU debuts on the men's side of the 800 meters, and finished in 2:03.68 and 2:12.07, respectively.

Brown also led eight new personal bests in the men's and women's 1,500 meters. Sophomore Cheryn Trapp and freshmen Gwyneth McMorris and Nyalual Beng all set new personal bests on the women's side of the event, finishing in 4:42.38, 4:45.83 and 4:53.48, respectively. Sophomore Ben Richardson, junior Spencer Russell, junior John Talik and freshman Ethan Cotton then joined Brown with new personal bests on the men's side of the event, finishing in 3:58.94, 4:00.40, 4:05.67 and 4:33.21, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the field, junior D'nara Jones set PSU personal bests in the long jump and triple jump Friday. Jones jumped 17-11.50 (5.47m) in the women's long jump, beating her mark from the Rose City Preview by 17 inches. Jones then followed it up with a jump of 36-11.00 (11.25m) in the triple jump, moving her up to 10th all-time at Portland State in the event.

Junior Major Oni also moved up to third all-time in the men's hammer with a personal-best throw of 158-00.25 (48.16m).

The Vikings will return to action next weekend, as the teams split up with some athletes competing at the Mt. SAC Relays, April 16-18, in Walnut, Calif., while the rest of the team competes at the Oregon Relays, April 17-18, in Eugene, Ore.
