DAY ONE RECAP
EUGENE, Ore. — Sophomore
Akayla Anderson broke through in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday, winning the event in a personal-best and Big Sky-qualifying time of 13.87 seconds to lead the Portland track and field teams on the final day of the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.
Â
Anderson's previous best this season had been 14.42 seconds, but the sophomore newcomer blew that away by more than half a second with her time Saturday.
Â
Anderson now joins teammates
Jazmin Ratcliff and
CeCelia Jackson at the top of the Big Sky Conference in the 100-meter hurdles this season, as Ratcliff, Jackson and Anderson now rank first, second and tied for third in the conference, respectively. Those three also formed a dominant force in the 60-meter hurdles during the indoor season, as Ratcliff and Anderson finished first and second in the event at the Big Sky Indoor Championships, while Jackson finished fifth.
Â
Junior
Major Oni, meanwhile, followed up his historic mark in the hammer on Friday with a personal-best mark in the triple jump. Oni jumped 45-01.50 (13.75m) on his second attempt of the day Saturday, moving him up to 10th in the Big Sky in the event this season.
Â
Freshman
Ta'mara Richey also tied her seasonal best in the women's triple jump Saturday, jumping 38-06.00 (11.73m) to match the mark she originally set at the Stanford Invitational two weekends ago.
Â
Additionally, freshman
Haley Bell set a new personal best in the javelin with her mark of 123-01 (37.53m) Saturday.
Â
Senior
Nettie Wayne also shaved a tick off her personal best in the 100 meters, finishing in 12.40 seconds Saturday, just ahead of her previous best of 12.41 seconds at last season's OSU High Performance meet.
Â
The Vikings will return to action next weekend, when they split up for the second straight week with some of the team competing at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge in Berkeley, Calif., while the rest competes at the Mt. Hood Invitational in Gresham, Ore.
