Vikings Win Four Events as They Make Final Push Towards Regionals at Portland Twilight

RESULTS

PORTLAND, Ore. —
The Portland State track and field teams claimed four event wins at the Portland Twilight meet Sunday, as a small group of Vikings made one last push towards qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary meet later this month.

The Viking women swept the titles in the 100 meters, 400 meters, 100-meter hurdles and long jump, and added the second-place finishers in the 100 meters and 100-meter hurdles.

Senior Jasmine Woods and sophomore Genna Settle went 1-2 in the women's 100 meters, with Woods winning in 11.92 seconds to Settle's 12.17.

Sophomores CeCelia Jackson and Akayla Anderson also went 1-2 in the women's 100-meter hurdles, with Jackson finishing in 14.04 seconds, ahead of Anderson's time of 14.21.

Additionally, sophomore Whitney Diggs won the women's 400 meters in 55.24 seconds, while freshman Ta'mara Richey won the women's long jump despite recording one of her weaker marks of the season with a jump of 17-09.50 (5.42m).

Junior Rockwell Tufty also placed second in the men's high jump, as he cleared 6-09.00 (2.06m), his second-best mark of the outdoor season.

None of the Vikings' athletes at the meet improved their marks at the meet, however, keeping the Vikings where they were in regional standings entering the meet. The Vikings will now have to await the final entries to the NCAA West Preliminary meet, as the qualifying period ended at midnight Sunday.

Despite not improving their times Sunday, Woods and Jackson should be assured of qualifying in the 100 meters and 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Woods ended Sunday ranked tied for 44th in the 100 meters – well within the top 48 athletes in the event who are assured of qualifying for the meet – while Jackson finished the day ranked tied for 43rd in the 100-meter hurdles.

Richey, meanwhile, ranks tied for 56th in the NCAA west in the long jump, but could still qualify for the regional meet if athletes above her in the standings decide not to declare for the long jump. Tufty will also have to hope some athletes ranked above him in the men's high jump opt out, as he finished the day ranked tied for 58th in the event.

The NCAA West Preliminary will run May 28-30 in Austin, Texas, with the top 12 athletes in each event at the meet qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 10-13.
