PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State track and field program takes a step up in competition this weekend, as the Vikings send a small group of athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary meet, May 28-30, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The regional meet serves as the first step towards the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which the Vikings will be shooting to qualify athletes for for the first time since 2013.
Â
The Vikings will compete in six events at the meet, with the top 12 in each event advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Different events take on different formats at the NCAA West Preliminary, as some events compete across two rounds, while others compete across just one round.
Â
The Vikings will compete in three events that just have one round at the NCAA West Preliminary, including the women's long jump, which sophomore
Baileh Simms enters as the highest-ranked Viking in the NCAA west regional standings. Simms enters the long jump at the NCAA West Preliminary ranked fifth in the NCAA west, after defending her Big Sky title in the event with a Portland State-, championship meet- and Big Sky-record jump of 20-09.25 (6.33m). Simms would likely punch her ticket to nationals with a similar jump at the NCAA West Preliminary, which would make her the first Viking to ever qualify for the national meet in the long jump.
Â
The women's long jump gets underway at 6 p.m. (CT) Thursday, with Simms competing in the fourth and final flight of the event.
Â
Senior
Camelia Mayfield also only faces one round in the women's 10,000 meters, as the semifinals of the event – before the finals take place in Eugene – at 9 p.m. (CT) Thursday.
Â
Additionally, the Vikings' 4x100-meter relay team only faces one round at the NCAA West Preliminary, as the quarterfinals of the event – before the semifinals and finals take place in Eugene – starts at 6 p.m. (CT) Saturday. The Vikings will run in the third of three heats in the event, with the top three finishers in each heat and the next three-best times all advancing to Eugene.
Â
The rest of the Vikings, meanwhile, will face two rounds in their respective events, between the 100 meters, 200 meters and 100-meter hurdles. Senior
Jasmine Woods competes in the 100 and 200 meters for the Vikings, with the first round of the 100 starting at 6:30 p.m. (CT) Thursday. Woods runs in the second of six heats in the first round of the 100, with the top three from each heat and the next six-best times advancing to the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. (CT) Friday. The quarterfinals will be competed across three heats, with the top three in each heat advancing to Eugene, as well as the next three-best times.
Â
The women's 200 meters will follow the same format as the 100 meters, with the first round starting at 8 p.m. (CT) Friday, while the quarterfinals start at 7:35 p.m. (CT) Saturday.
Â
The women's 100-meter hurdles also follows the same format as the 100 meters, with senior
Jazmin Ratcliff and sophomore
CeCelia Jackson opening competition with the first round at 5 p.m. (CT) Friday, while the quarterfinals start at 7:05 p.m. (CT). Both Jackson and Ratcliff competed in the 100-meter hurdles last season as well, with Ratcliff advancing to the quarterfinals of the event.

BIG SKY OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP:The Portland State women's track and field team recorded its third-best finish in program history with a third-place finish at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 13-16, at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash. The Vikings' third-place finish marked the team's best finish within the Big Sky since a second-place finish in 2013, which tied the Vikings' second-place finish in 2006 for the program's best overall finish at the conference outdoor meet. Senior
Jazmin Ratcliff and sophomore
Baileh Simms led the Viking women to their strong finish at the meet, as they each defended their Big Sky individual titles in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump, respectively. Simms won her title on the Vikings' first day at the meet, as she won the women's long jump with a school-, championship meet- and Big Sky-record jump of 20-09.25 (6.33m). Simms' mark crushed her previous best in the event by over a foot, and broke Montana State's Lacy Hintzpeter's 12-year-old Big Sky and championship meet, as well as Kerry-Ann Blackwood's nine-year-old school record. Ratcliff, meanwhile, led a 1-2-4 finish for the Vikings in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing ahead of sophomore teammates
CeCelia Jackson and
Akayla Anderson. Ratcliff won the title in 13.94 seconds, while Jackson and Anderson finished in 14.05 and 14.24 seconds. Those three finishes gave the Vikings 23 points in the event, and the Viking women scored in bunches in a few other events as well. Besides Simms, the Vikings also had athletes place third and fourth in the women's long jump behind sophomore
Genna Settle and freshman
Ta'mara Richey. Senior

Â
OSU HIGH PERFORMANCE RECAP:Sophomore
Genna Settle blew away the field while setting a meet record in the 100 meters, while junior
Rockwell Tufty broke his own school record in the men's high jump, as the pair of them led the Vikings at the OSU High Performance Meet, April 30-May 1, at Whyte Track and Field Center in Corvallis, Ore. VIKINGS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS:As the Vikings step onto the regional stage this weekend, the Vikings have six athletes or relays ranked in the top 100 of the nation in their respective events. Five of those will compete at the NCAA West Preliminary meet this weekend, with the lone athlete unlucky enough not to qualify despite his high ranking being junior
Rockwell Tufty, who ranks 87th in the nation in the high jump off his school-record mark of 6-10.25 (2.09m) at the OSU High Performance meet on May 1. The rest of the Vikings in the national rankings had better luck, starting with sophomore
Baileh Simms, who ranks as the highest Viking in the national rankings at 17th in the women's long jump, thanks to her monster jump of 20-09.25 (6.33m) that won her her second straight Big Sky title in the event. Besides Simms, senior
Jazmin Ratcliff and sophomore
CeCelia Jackson each rank in the top 100 in the 100-meter hurdles, with Ratcliff ranking 55th while Jackson ranks 96th. Ratcliff earned her ranking with her time of 13.46 seconds at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships on May 15, while Jackson earned her ranking off her time of 13.62 seconds at the Sacramento State Open on May 9. The Vikings' 4x100-meter relay team of Ratcliff, Simms,

VIKINGS IN NCAA WEST RANKINGS:More important to the NCAA West Preliminary, however, was the Vikings' rankings in the NCAA West regional rankings. Athletes could assure themselves of a spot at the regional meet with a top 48 ranking in their respective individual events, but could also qualify if athletes above them opted out. In the end, five Vikings finished in the top 48 of their respective events, led by sophomore
Baileh Simms, who moved way up to fifth in the NCAA west with her record jump of 20-09.25 (6.33m) at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Besides her, senior
Jazmin Ratcliff ranks as the next highest Viking in the west rankings, as she ranks 24th in the west in the 100-meter hurdles off her time of 13.46 seconds at the Big Sky meet. Sophomore
CeCelia Jackson also ranks 43rd in the 100-meter hurdles off her time of 13.62 seconds at the Sacramento State Open. Additionally, senior

The Vikings also added two qualifiers for the NCAA West Preliminary that didn't assure themselves of a spot based on their rankings in Woods in the women's 200 meters, as well as the Vikings' 4x100-meter relay team. Woods ranked 71st in the NCAA west in the 200 meters off her time of 23.92 seconds at the Sacramento State Open, while the Vikings' 4x100-meter relay team ranked 41st – only the top 24 relay teams were assured of making the meet – off its time of 45.24 seconds at the same meet.

2015 INDOOR SEASON RECAP:The Vikings had a somewhat disappointing end to what had been a highly successful indoor season at the Big Sky Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz., at the end of February. The Viking women had hoped to challenge for a Big Sky title at the meet, but placed tied for fourth instead, while the men finished last with eight total points. Senior
Jazmin Ratcliff still led an impressive showing from the Vikings in the 60-meter hurdles at the meet. The Vikings scored 22 points in the meet, highlighted by Ratcliff, who won the event in a school-record 8.33 seconds. Sophomore
Akayla Anderson placed second behind Ratcliff to earn All-Big Sky honors in the event as well, while senior
Jasmine Woods and sophomore
Genna Settle also earned All-Big Sky honors with second- and third-place finishes in the 60 and 200 meters, respectively. The Vikings also had several standout performances during the indoor regular season, as the Viking women won four Big Sky Athlete of the Week honors during the season. Ratcliff won two in a row at the start of the season, while junior
Sydney Johnson and sophomore
Genna Settle followed with their first career athlete of the week honors over the next two weeks. The Vikings also set two new school records at the UW Invitational, as junior
Amanda Boman broke the record in the women's 5,000 with her time of 17:01.73, while the Viking men's distance medley relay team broke a 10-year-old record with their time of 10:05.11 in the event.
