VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS AND INTERVIEWS
EUGENE, Ore. — Sophomore
Baileh Simms earned second-team NCAA All-American honors with a 15th-place finish in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field Thursday, making her only the third second-team All-American in school history.
Â
Simms earned her All-American honors after cracking 20 feet in the long jump for the third straight meet to end the season. Simms finished with a mark of 20-03.00 (6.17m) Thursday, which came on the heels of similar performances at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships and NCAA West Preliminary.
Â
Simms had never cracked 20 feet before the Big Sky meet four weeks ago, but soared to a Portland State-, championship meet- and Big Sky Conference-record of 20-09.25 (6.33m) while defending her Big Sky title in the event at the meet. Simms then cracked 20 feet again at the NCAA West Preliminary, finishing with a mark of 20-04.25 (6.20m).
Â
"I feel great. I mean, I feel like I've accomplished more than I thought I would this year," Simms said. "I always strive to be the best collegiate athlete I can be, but to be able to make it this far and to get second-team All-American, it feels great. I feel like I have courage now to do even better."
Â
Simms joins Geronne Black and Joenisha Vinson as second-team NCAA All-Americans within the Viking program. All three of the Vikings' second-team All-American honors have come in the last three years, as Black earned second-team honors in the indoor 60 meters in 2013, while Vinson earned second-team honors in the outdoor heptathlon in 2013. Both Black and Vinson were seniors when they earned second-team honors, though, making Simms the youngest Viking to ever receive All-American honors.
Â
Senior
Jasmine Woods was hoping to join Simms as a second-team All-American Thursday, but finished 23rd in the semifinals of the 100 meters in 11.63 seconds.
Â
"I felt like my drive out of the blocks could have been better," Woods said. "I was really struggling to keep my high-knees up, and unfortunately I didn't succeed in that area. But I tried to finish the race strong and just have a positive attitude towards the end.
Â
"Sometimes things don't really go as you planned, but at the end of the day I try to be positive, and I got here. It was a blessing just to be at nationals, so I'm very happy that I ended my senior year here at nationals."
Â
Woods' participation at nationals gave the Vikings two national qualifiers in the same season for the first time in program history. Like Simms, Woods made nationals after breaking out towards the end of the season, as she broke the Portland State- and Big Sky Conference-records in the 100 meters at the NCAA West Preliminary with her time of 11.35 seconds in the first round of the event. Woods' time represented over a quarter-second personal best for the senior, beating the time of 11.62 seconds she set in the prelims of the 100 at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Â
"What Baileh did today and even what Jasmine did says a lot," head coach
Ronnye Harrison said. "With the resources we have at PSU, it's a special person that can take that execution, that focus with those resources and come here and be one of the top 24 people in the country, and Baileh is number 15. That's incredible to me. I'm really proud of her, and I'm really proud of Jasmine."
