DAY ONE RECAP
NAMPA, Idaho — Portland State multi-event athlete
Kevin Robinson spent the past two indoor seasons held back by injury, but on Saturday, the senior finally completed his first heptathlon as a Viking, finishing fifth with 4,369 points at the Ed Jacoby Invitational at Jacksons Indoor Track.
Â
Robinson, who missed the first half of the 2014 indoor season and all of the 2015 indoor season due to injury, kicked off the day Saturday with his strongest individual event performance in the 60-meter hurdles. Robinson crossed the line in 8.89 seconds for 770 points in the event, three points more than the 767 points he totaled in the high jump, the final event of the day Friday.
Â
Robinson then cleared 10-08.00 (3.25m) in the pole vault, two inches higher than his personal best of 10-06.00 (3.20m) in the outdoor pole vault, before finishing the grueling 1,000 meters in 3:00.82 to finish the heptathlon with 4,369 points.
Â
Dino Dodig of Washington State won the heptathlon with 5,464 points overall, beating Cody Thomas, the day-one leader out of Alaska Anchorage, who finished second with 5,324 points.
Â
Portland State's
Donté Robinson was also competing in the heptathlon at the meet, but no-heighted in the pole vault, the sixth event of the competition, and did not complete a score.
Â
The Vikings will return to Jacksons Indoor next week, when they compete at the Bronco Invitational on Jan. 23.
