Diggs, Cook Claim Big Sky Leads in 400, Triple Jump for Vikings at Husky Classic Saturday

RESULTS
DAY ONE RECAP

SEATTLE, Wash. —
Junior Whitney Diggs and freshman ChaQuinn Cook took over the Big Sky leads in the women's 400 meters and triple jump, respectively, at the Husky Classic Saturday, making them late favorites to win their respective events at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in less than two weeks.

Diggs took over the lead in the 400 meters with a huge seasonal best, finishing in 55.00 seconds, more than two full seconds faster than her previous best this season of 57.09 seconds. Diggs' time also crushed North Dakota's Tianna McKinney previous conference best of 55.86 seconds this season, giving her a lead within the Big Sky of .86 seconds at the end of the indoor regular season.

Diggs' time also stands as her second-best ever at Portland State, as well as her fastest finish since setting the school record with her time of 54.89 seconds at the 2014 Big Sky Indoor Championships nearly two years ago.

Freshman Rachel Vinjamuri also set a huge personal best in the 400 meters Saturday, as she shaved nearly four-tenths of a second off her PR with her time of 56.78 seconds.

Cook, meanwhile, reclaimed the Big Sky lead in the women's triple jump after she lost it to Eastern Washington's Dominique Butler last weekend. Cook originally took the lead in the Big Sky with her mark of 38-00.25 (11.59m) at the Bronco Invitational on Jan. 23, but lost it after Butler jumped 38-01.50 (11.62m) at the MSU, UM, SSU, EWU Dual Meet on Feb. 5. Cook blew away both her and Butler's previous bests with her mark Saturday, however, as she jumped 39-07.00 (12.06m) on her first attempt of the day to give her a near-18-inch lead over Butler with less than two weeks until the Big Sky meet.

Additionally, Cook's mark moves her up to sixth all-time in the event at Portland State, and gives her the best mark in the indoor triple jump by a Viking since 2012.

Viking middle distance runners Nyalual Beng and Kris Tollefson also set new personal bests in the women's 800 meters at their third straight meet, as they finished in 2:15.46 and 2:15.67, respectively. Beng and Tollefson now rank 11th and 12th in the Big Sky in the women's 800 meters, giving them a good chance of qualifying for the event at the Big Sky meet.

Junior Genna Settle, who is already automatically qualified for the Big Sky meet in the 60 and 200 meters, also put herself in good qualifying position in the women's long jump as she set a new indoor PR with her mark of 18-03.25 (5.57m) Saturday to move into a tie for eighth in the conference this season.

Additionally, sophomore Donté Robinson and freshman Jean-Luc Toku set new personal bests in the men's high jump and long jump, respectively, and now await their fates in qualifying.

Robinson topped his old PR in the high jump by a quarter of an inch, clearing 6-05.00 (1.96m) to give him sole possession of eighth-place all-time in the event at Portland State. Robinson also moved into a tied for 13th in the Big Sky this season in the high jump, leaving him on the qualifying bubble for the conference meet.

Toku, meanwhile, surpassed his old PR in the long jump by an inch and a half, jumping 21-08.75 (6.62m) Saturday. Toku now ranks 16th in the event within the Big Sky, putting him squarely on the qualifying bubble for the event as only the top 16 declared student-athletes in each event will make the Big Sky meet at the end of the month.

The Viking men's 4x400-meter relay team of Christian Wood, Kevin Robinson, Mitchell Gable and Spenser Schmidt also ran a seasonal best of 3:22.74 in the relay Saturday, moving them up 10th in the conference.

The Vikings will have one last chance to improve their marks before the end of the indoor regular season, however, as they compete at the UW Indoor Open Sunday at the Dempsey Indoor facility. Field events and running events start at 9 a.m. (PT).
