VIDEO - Cook's winning jump in the triple jump
RECAPS - DAY 1 | DAY 2
BOZEMAN, Mont. - If Portland State proved Vikings could jump Friday, then the Portland State track & field team proved Vikings could sprint as well as jump Saturday, as the Vikings concluded the Big Sky Indoor Championships with seven All-Big Sky performances on the final day of the meet at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
Freshman
ChaQuinn Cook led the way, as she claimed the Big Sky title in the indoor long jump, becoming the first Viking female athlete to win a conference title in the event since 2005. Cook won the triple jump with a personal-best jump of 40-01.50 (12.23m), a full foot ahead of her nearest competitor in the event. Cook's jump also moved her up to fifth all-time in the event at Portland State, as she became the first Viking female athlete to crack 40 feet in the indoor triple jump since 2009.
Sophomore
Ta'mara Richey finished third in the triple jump as well, giving the Vikings two All-Big Sky performers in the event, and giving Richey her second all-conference honor of the meet following her third-place finish in the long jump Friday. Richey jumped 38-04.75 (11.70m) in earning All-Big Sky honors in the triple jump, her best mark of the season by over a foot.
Junior
Genna Settle, meanwhile, claimed All-Big Sky honors in the women's 60 and 200 meters Saturday, finishing second and third in each event, respectively. Settle finished just three-hundredths of a second behind Eastern Washington's Rebecca Tarbert in the finals of the 60 meters, finishing in 7.54 seconds to Tarbert's winning time of 7.51. Settle then returned to the track in the 200, and placed third in a time of 24.76 seconds.
Settle now has five All-Big Sky honors in her Portland State career, the most of any current Viking athlete.
Juniors
Whitney Diggs and
Akayla Anderson also claimed All-Big Sky honors while placing second in their respective events Saturday. Diggs placed second in the 400 meters in 56.36 seconds, giving the junior her second All-Big Sky honor in the indoor 400 meters at Portland State. Anderson, meanwhile, placed second in the 60-meter hurdles to Weber State's Tawnie Moore, who led the Big Sky in the event all season long. Anderson and Moore finished well ahead of the rest of the 60-meter hurdles field Saturday, as the No. 3 time in the event came in at 8.69 seconds, nearly two-tenths of a second behind Anderson's second-place time of 8.52.
Junior
Ben Richardson posted the Vikings' last All-Big Sky performance of the meet, and perhaps the team's most surprising. Richardson qualified for the finals of the 800 third overall on Friday, but had entered the meet ranked 14th in the event and would not have been expected to score, let alone finish in the top three. Richardson proved the form charts wrong, though, finishing third in the finals of the event Saturday in a personal best of 1:53.95.
Outside of the All-Big Sky performers, the Vikings also picked up several more scoring performances Saturday. On the women's side, freshman
Rachel Vinjamuri joined Diggs in scoring for the Vikings in the 400 meters, as she placed sixth overall in 56.92 seconds, her second-best finish of the season.
Vinjamuri and Diggs also ran the last two legs on the Vikings' 4x400-meter relay team along with
Roazena Miller and
Dejuanae Toliver, and finished fifth in 3:52.36 to score four more points for the Viking women.
Alex Cisneros and
Jean-Luc Toku also scored for the Viking men with sixth-place finishes in the 3,000 meters and triple jump, respectively. Cisneros finished the 3,000 in 8:39.29, while Toku finished the men's triple jump with a mark of 46-11.50 (14.31m).
The Viking women placed fifth overall at the meet with 62 total points, while the Viking men placed 10th with 32 points.
