Vikings Add Four Big Sky Qualifiers on Second Day of OSU High Performance Meet

RESULTS
DAY ONE RECAP

CORVALLIS, Ore. —
With the Big Sky Championships less than two weeks away, the Portland State track & field team strengthened its numbers going into the conference meet Saturday, as the Vikings added four Big Sky qualifying marks on the second day of the OSU High Performance Meet at Whyte Track & Field Center.

Spenser Schmidt (men's 100 meters), Raquel Pellecer (women's javelin), Kevin Robinson (men's 110-meter hurdles) and Sydney Johnson (women's discus) added the Big Sky qualifying marks for the Vikings. The Vikings now have 24 conference auto marks between the men and women during the outdoor season, nearly triple the Vikings' total from the indoor season, when the Vikings finished with nine auto marks.

Schmidt, who has already qualified for the conference meet in the long jump and could make it as an additional 200-meter runner, hit the Big Sky auto mark in the 100 meters Friday with an overall personal-best finish of 10.73. Schmidt had been dancing around the 10.75 needed to qualify for the conference meet all season with times of 10.83, 10.81, 10.82 and 10.80, but never could quite get under the mark. Schmidt broke through that with his time Friday, however, and now ranks tied for seventh in the Big Sky this season, as well as sixth all-time at Portland State.

Pellecer, meanwhile, had a similar break through in the women's javelin, as she had come within a couple feet of the 137-09 (42.00m) qualifying standard, but couldn't ever get past it. Pellecer topped out at 135-08 (41.35m) four weekends ago at the Mondo Mid-Major Team Challenge, and hadn't been above 130 at her three meets since then. Pellecer came through Saturday, however, beating her mark at the Mondo meet by three-and-a-half feet with a throw of 139-03.50 (42.45), which moves her up to 7th in the Big Sky this season.

Robinson also came through with a big personal best in the 110-meter hurdles, as he ducked under the conference-qualifying standard of 14.80 with his finish in 14.74 seconds. Robinson ducked under 15 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles for the first time just two weekends ago with his finish in 14.98 seconds at the Oregon Relays, but beat that time by close to a quarter of a second with his finish Saturday. Robinson, who also met the Big Sky qualifying standard in the decathlon earlier in the season, now ranks eighth in the Big Sky in the event this season, and moves up to sixth all-time in the event at Portland State.

Johnson, finally, capped the day of qualifying marks for the Vikings with a two-foot seasonal best of 148-06.25 (45.26m) in the women's discus. Johnson, who holds the school record in the discus after breaking it as a freshman, now ranks fifth in the Big Sky in the discus, making her a threat to score in the discus for the first time since her record-setting freshman season.

Outside of the new qualifying marks, junior Ben Richardson also improved his qualifying time in the 800 meters, as he ducked under 1:52 for the second straight week with a personal-best finish of 1:51.90. Fellow junior Akayla Anderson lowered her qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles as well, as she finished in 13.94 seconds Saturday, .02 better than the 13.96 she ran at the Oregon Relays two weekends ago.

Junior Genna Settle nearly matched her qualifying mark in the 100 meters, as she placed second overall in 11.71 seconds, one-hundredth of a second off the personal best of 11.70 she tied at the Oregon Relays two weekends ago. Junior Whitney Diggs, meanwhile, beat her personal best in the 100 meters by one-hundredth of a second, finishing in 12.14 Saturday, while Rachel Vinjamuri beat her PSU personal best with her finish in 12.21 seconds.

Freshman ChaQuinn Cook didn't better her Big Sky qualifying mark in the triple jump, but still broke 40 feet for a second straight meet and won the event for a third time in 2016 with her jump of 40-02.75 (12.26m).

Additionally, junior Roazena Miller set a huge personal best in the women's 400 meters, as she finished second overall in 56.40 seconds, nearly three-quarters of a second better than the PR of 57.13 she set at the John Knight Twilight meet earlier this season. Miller has been knocking time off her PR in the 400 all season, as her time Saturday beat her season-opening time of 58.32 by nearly two full seconds. Redshirt senior Dejuanae Toliver also set a huge seasonal best with her finish of 57.31 seconds, which knocked close to a full second off her previous seasonal best of 58.27 seconds.

The Vikings will now head into the championship portion of their schedule, as they next compete at the Big Sky Championships in Greeley, Colo. The Big Sky meet starts with the combined events on May 11, while the rest of the events start May 13.
