Junior Genna Settle (left, #392) won the Big Sky title in the women's 100 meters while tying a Big Sky meet record of 11.46 seconds, and came within a hundredth of a second of winning the title in the women's 200 meters, as well.

Vikings Win Three Titles on Final Day of Big Sky Championships

RESULTS
RECAPS - DAY 1 | DAY 2 | DAY 3

GREELEY, Colo. —
A trifecta of titles? School and conference records? NCAA West and U.S. Junior Outdoor qualifying marks? The Portland State track & field team didn't need Robin Hood's help to find success at Northern Colorado's Nottingham Field, as the Vikings closed out the Big Sky Championships in style Saturday.

Junior Genna Settle led the Vikings' strong final day at the conference meet, as she nearly pulled off a 100-200 title sweep, and also ran a leg on the Vikings' All-Big Sky 4x100-meter relay team.

Settle got the day started with the 4x100, where she joined Akayla Anderson, Rachel Vinjamuri and Whitney Diggs in placing third in 46.12 seconds.

That was just a warm-up for Settle, though, as she returned to the track 90 minutes later and won the Big Sky title in the women's 100 meters with a huge personal best of 11.46 seconds. Settle tied the Big Sky Championship meet record with her time, which beat her old personal best by close to a quarter of a second, and beat the field by .13 seconds.

Additionally, Settle's time in the 100 moved her into a tie for 26th in the NCAA West in the 100 meters, giving her a good chance of qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at the end of the month.

Settle's win in the 100 meters also marked a return for the Vikings to the top of the conference in the showcase sprint. The Vikings won six straight titles in the women's 100 meters from 2008-13, as well as nine of 10 titles from 2004-13, but hadn't won since then until Settle broke the drought Saturday.

Settle nearly added another individual title an hour later in the finals of the 200 meters, but Weber State's Aaliyah Crawford edged her at the line, winning in 23.41 seconds to Settle's time of 23.42.

Settle's time still broke the school record in the event, however, surpassing the old record of 23.46 that former world qualifier Karene King set in 2011. King's mark also stood as the Big Sky Conference record, which Settle would have broken as well if not for Crawford.

Settle also moved into a tie for 30th in the NCAA West with her finish in the 200 meters, giving her a good chance of qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in that event as well.

Settle then wrapped her day by running the third leg of the Vikings' 4x400-meter relay, and placed fourth in 3:48.77 along with Roazena Miller, Vinjamuri and Diggs.

Before Settle took over on the track, however, freshman ChaQuinn Cook set the tone early in the day by winning the Big Sky title in the women's triple jump. Cook trailed Montana's Samantha Evans – who led the Big Sky in the event for much of the season – going into her sixth and final attempt, but came through with a personal-best jump of 41-02.50 (12.56m) to edge out Evans by an inch.

Cook's title follows her Big Sky title in the indoor triple jump, making her the first Viking to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles in the triple jump since Gayle Imran-Sideris in 2005. Cook also ranks second to Imran-Sideris in the all-time triple jump ranking at Portland State, as her mark at the Big Sky meet Saturday only trails Imran-Sideris' record of 42-04.75 (12.92m) in 2006.

Cook's mark also moved her up to 30th in the NCAA West in the triple jump, making her a strong contender to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds along with Settle. Additionally, Cook hit the qualifying standard for the U.S. Junior Outdoor Championships with her winning mark, which will take place June 24-26 in Clovis, Calif.

Anderson, meanwhile, followed with a Big Sky title in the women's 100-meter hurdles minutes after Cook wrapped up her Big Sky title in the triple jump. Anderson won going away, finishing in 13.70 seconds, .16 seconds ahead of Sacramento State's Kristen Robinson, who finished second in 13.86 seconds.

Like Settle and Cook, Anderson also stands a good chance of qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, as her time of 13.59 in the Big Sky prelims moved her into a tie for 37th in the NCAA West.

Senior Amanda Boman nearly gave the Viking women a fourth Big Sky title, as she made an aggressive move to take the lead at the bell in the women's 5,000 meters. Northern Arizona's Melanie Townsend caught Boman on the home stretch, however, winning in 17:01.60 to Boman's 17:03.07. Boman's finish still gave the senior All-Big Sky honors in the women's 5,000, the longest distance at which a Viking has ever earned All-Big Sky honors.

Junior Ben Richardson also made the Viking distance crew proud Saturday, as he finished third in the men's 800 meters in 1:52.87. Richardson placed third in the indoor 800 as well, giving the junior two All-Big Sky honors in 2016.

Senior Rockwell Tufty capped his Portland State career with All-Big Sky honors as well, as he tied for third in the high jump with a seasonal best of 6-09.00 (2.06m). The All-Big Sky honor put a fitting end to Tufty's career, which has included the indoor and outdoor school records in the high jump, as well as a second-place finish in the outdoor high jump in 2014.

Senior Sheldon Prince also found a fitting end to his Portland State career, as he anchored the Vikings to a new school record of 3:14.43 in the men's 4x400-meter relay. Hunter Pfefferkorn, Kevin Robinson - himself a senior who was finishing his Portland State career - and Mitchell Gable joined Prince in setting the school record, which beat the old school record from 2011 by over half a second.

Prince, Gable and Pfefferkorn also joined Spenser Schmidt to post a strong time in the 4x100-meter relay at the start of the day. That foursome finished in 41.19, the third-best mark in school history, and best since 1999.

Schmidt also set a new personal best while finishing sixth in the finals of the 100 meters in 10.59 seconds. Schmidt's time gave him sole possession of third-place all-time at Portland State, and put him just .05 off the school record of 10.54, which Jim Sattem set in 2003.

Diggs also scored for the Vikings in two different individual events Saturday, as she placed fifth in both the 200 and 400 meters. Diggs placed fifth in the 200 in a new seasonal best of 24.12 seconds, the second best time she's ever run as a Viking. Additionally, Diggs came in fifth in the 400 meters in 55.45 seconds, the highest finish of her career in the event.

Vinjamuri joined Diggs as a scorer in the women's 400 meters as well, as she matched the personal best she ran in the prelims while finishing seventh in 55.93 seconds.

Overall, the Viking women placed sixth as a team with 84 points, while the Viking men placed 11th with 40.5 points. The Viking men's point total marks their highest at the Big Sky outdoor meet since 2007, as well as their fourth-highest point total in school history.

The Vikings will now await the announcement of qualifiers for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, which will come at the end of next week. If the Vikings have athletes qualify, then the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds will take place May 26-28 in Lawrence, Kan.
