Medved, Distance Runners Lead Vikings on First Day of OSU High Performance Meet

RESULTS

CORVALLIS, Ore. —
Sarah Medved shaved 10 seconds off her personal best in the 5,000 meters Friday, as she led a group of Viking distance runners on the first day of the OSU High Performance Meet at the Whyte Track & Field Center.

Medved – an All-Big Sky cross country runner this fall – finished the 5,000 in 17:13.53 Friday, beating her old best of 17:23.95 that she set last year at the Oregon Relays. Medved moved up to 10th all-time at Portland State in the 5,000 meters off her time last season, and moved up one spot to ninth all-time with her time Friday.

Sophomore Kaila Ann Gibson narrowly missed joining Medved in the top 10 all-time in the 5,000 meters, as she finished in 17:23.32 – less than half a second behind the current No. 10 time in Portland State history of 17:22.87, set by Brittany Castillo in 2012.

Gibson did shave more seconds off her personal best than Medved, however, as her time Friday beat her old best of 17:48.92 – set earlier this season – by 26 seconds.

Freshmen Michael Biedebach and Alec Hornecker knocked multiple seconds off their personal bests in the men's 5,000 meters, as well, as they finished in 14:48.11 and 14:54.89, respectively. Biedebach's finish beat his old best by more than eight seconds, while Hornecker beat his previous best by more than 10 seconds.

Like Gibson, Biedebach narrowly missed entering the top 10 all-time in the 5,000 meters, as his time of 14:48.11 put him within four seconds of the current No. 10 time of 14:44.91, set by Blake Flanders in 2005.

Junior newcomer Alana Chaplin finished as the Viking third runner in the women's 5,000 meters despite making her debut in the event outdoors. Chaplin finished in 18:24.39, ahead of senior Cheryn Trapp and sophomore Jocelyn Reynolds, who finished in 18:31.16 and 19:01.54, respectively.

Freshman Liam Jemison ran the men's 1,500 meters in 4:04.98, less than a second behind his seasonal best of 4:03.99 – set last week at the Triton Invitational.

Senior Kennedy Martin ran in a combined section of the 10,000 meters, as well, and finished in 41:13.93.

The Vikings continue at the OSU High Performance Meet Saturday, with events starting for the Vikings at 12:30 p.m. (PT).
