DAY 1 RECAP
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior
Ta'mara Richey made her regional-stage debut at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds Saturday, but did not advance past the first round of the triple jump while placing 44th with a best jump of 38-06.00 (11.73m).
Â
Richey made her regional debut Saturday after fighting off an injury she suffered while warming up for the triple jump at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships two weeks ago. Richey came into the Big Sky meet ranked second in the conference, but was forced to scratch from the competition following her injury.
Â
Richey came into the regional meet ranked tied for 37th in the NCAA West on the back of a personal-best jump of 40-11.50 (12.48m). Richey set that mark at the Texas Invitational on April 14, and was competing at the same facility Saturday. Richey couldn't muster the same magic this time around, however, in part because of the injury she suffered at the Big Sky meet.
Â
Richey will take her regional experience into her senior season with the Vikings in 2018, when she will return as a three-time All-Big Sky athlete between the indoor and outdoor long and triple jump. Richey will enter her senior season ranked in the top five all-time at Portland State in the indoor long jump (3rd), outdoor triple jump (4th) and outdoor long jump (5th).
