SALEM, Ore. — The Portland State track & field team competed in its sophomore meet of the 2018 outdoor season at the Willamette Invitational Saturday, and sophomores
Angela Mumford and
Nia Powdrell led the way for the Vikings.
Â
Mumford was probably the busiest Viking at the meet, as she competed in the shot put, discus and hammer. Mumford's best mark came in the hammer, where she set a new personal best with a throw of 141-03.50 (43.06m). Mumford's throw beat the personal best she came into Portland State with by close to five feet, and moved her up to seventh all time in the hammer at Portland State. Mumford becomes the first Viking to enter the top 10 all time in the hammer since 2009.
Â
Mumford also improved on her marks in the shot put and discus from a week ago, as she set PSU personal bests with marks of 36-10.50 (11.24m) in the shot put, and 121-08.50 (37.09m) in the discus.
Â
Powdrell, meanwhile, swept the 100 and 200 meters at the Willamette Invitational, and is now 3-0 in individual sprint races so far in the outdoor season. Powdrell had a breakout meet at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in February, and followed that up with event wins in the 100 meters and 4x100-meter relay last week at the L&C Spring Break Open. Powdrell added two more event wins Saturday, as she won the 100 and 200 meters in 12.40 and 25.51 seconds, respectively.
Â
Outside of the sophomoric feel of the meet Saturday, freshmen
Megan Cornett and
Taylor Matsuzaki made their Portland State debuts while competing in the javelin at the Willamette Invitational. Cornett – who played in nine matches while making one start for the Vikings soccer team in the fall – nearly entered the all-time top 10 in the javelin in her first meet as a Viking. Cornett uncorked a throw of 126-07.50 (38.59m) on her second attempt of the day, putting her two-and-a-half inches off the No. 10 all-time mark in the event, which Maddie Buss set at 126-10 (38.65m) in 2016. Matsuzaki set her best mark on her third attempt of the day, as she finished with a top throw of 107-04 (32.71m).
Â
Junior
Jaron Barrow highlighted the day for the Viking men, as he entered the top 10 all time in the triple jump with a best mark of 45-10.50 (13.98m). Barrow set the mark on his first attempt of the day, moving him up to seventh all time in the event at Portland State. Barrow placed third in the men's triple jump Saturday, one spot ahead of teammate
Jean-Luc Toku, who holds the outdoor school record in the triple jump, but finished with a best mark of 45-05.75 (13.86m) Saturday.
Â
Barrow also placed second in the long jump with a mark of 21-10.25 (6.66m) on his fifth attempt of the day.
Â
The Vikings split their team for two different meets next weekend, as they head to the SF State Distance Carnival in San Francisco, Calif., next Friday, as well as the Al Manuel Northwest Invite in Missoula, Mont., next Friday and Saturday.
