FOREST GROVE, Ore. — 2018 has been a good year for Portland State track & field athlete
Donté Robinson.
Robinson won his first Big Sky title in the heptathlon at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in February, and hasn't lost a multi-event competition since placing second in decathlon at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships last May. Robinson won his third multi-event in three attempts this season, as he blew away the field while winning the decathlon at the Boxer Combined Event Wednesday at Hanson Stadium.
Robinson won the decathlon by close to 500 points while setting a new personal best with his score of 6,868 points. Corban's Michael Schmidt placed second to Robinson with 6,389 points.
Robinson didn't finish lower than third in any individual event during the decathlon, and set overall or decathlon personal bests in the 110-meter hurdles, pole vault and javelin.
Robinson opened Wednesday with his personal best in the 110-meter hurdles, as he placed second in the event in 15.43 seconds. That beat Robinson's previous overall personal best by .17 seconds, and beat his decathlon personal best in the event by more than a quarter of a second.
Robinson surpassed his old outdoor personal best in the pole vault by close to 16 inches, as he cleared 14-03.25 (4.35m) while winning the event Wednesday. Robinson also beat his indoor personal best of 13-09.00 (4.19m) by more than six inches, and moved up to seventh all time in the outdoor pole vault at Portland State.
Robinson set a decathlon personal best in the javelin while placing second in the event with a best throw of 174-09 (53.27m). Robinson's previous decathlon best in the javelin came at the same meet last season, when he finished with a mark of 173-08 (52.93m).
Robinson wasn't far off his personal best in the closing 1,500 meters, either, as he finished in 4:35.04 – less than four seconds off the personal best of 4:31.22 he set at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships last season. Robinson was pushing for a second-place finish at the conference meet that time, but didn't have the same need to push for a placement this time around.
Katie Baxter placed third in the heptathlon for the Viking women, while freshman
Kristen O'Handley placed right behind her in fourth.
Baxter moved up in the standings while placing second in javelin with a best throw of 110-09 (33.76m), and then closed the competition with a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:26.48.
O'Handley held the first-day lead in the heptathlon, but dropped in the standings after placing last in the javelin. O'Handley still won the long jump to open the day with a mark of 16-07.75 (5.07m).
Fellow freshman
Savanna Milroy tied for 11th in the heptathlon while finishing with 2,976 points. Milroy's best event Wednesday came in the javelin, where she placed ninth with a best throw of 76-00 (23.17m).
The Vikings return to Hanson Stadium for the Pacific Open this Saturday, one of three different meets the Vikings will compete at this weekend.
