MISSOULA, Mont. — The Portland State track & field team got a peek at its competition for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships six weeks early as the Vikings faced off against four other Big Sky schools at the Al Manuel Northwest Dual Invitational Saturday at the University of Montana's Dornblaser Field.
Â
The Vikings – competing against Idaho, Eastern Washington, Montana and Montana State – can take confidence in their women's sprinters, especially sophomore
Nia Powdrell, who extended her perfect start to the season in the women's 100 and 200 meters. Powdrell swept both events for the second straight week, moving her to 5-0 this outdoor season in either the 100 or 200 meters.
Â
Powdrell blew away the field in both events Saturday, as she won the 100 meters by three-tenths of a second and won the 200 meters by close to nine-tenths of a second. Powdrell won the 200 meters in 24.70 seconds, over eight-tenths of a second better than her time in the 200 meters last week, when she finished in 25.51 seconds at the Willamette Invitational.
Â
Powdrell also ran a leg on the Vikings' winning 4x100-meter relay, which finished in a seasonal-best 47.71 seconds.
Kristen O'Handley,
Ta'mara Richey and
Natalie Cummings joined Powdrell on the relay, which beat second-place Montana State by close to nine-tenths of a second.Â
Â
Powdrell would have added a fourth win to her meet resume in the women's long jump if not for her teammate, Richey. Richey and Powdrell finished 1-2 for the Vikings while jumping 18-07.25 (5.67m) and 18-01.00 (5.51m), respectively.
Â
The Vikings went 1-2-3-4 in the men's triple jump with
Chance Whitehurst beating out teammates
Jaron Barrow,
Kevin Luyamba and
Jean-Luc Toku for the event win. Whitehurst jumped 47-08.00 (14.53m) to move up to third all time in the event at Portland State, while Barrow moved up to seventh all time with his jump of 46-04.00 (14.12m). Luyamba nearly matched his personal best in triple jump while placing third behind Whitehurst and Luyamba with a mark of 45-03.50 (13.80m). Toku placed fourth with a jump of 45-01.00 (13.74m).
Â
Whitehurst was also the Vikings' top finisher in the men's long jump, as he placed third with a personal-best jump of 22-05.75 (6.85m).
Â
Katie Baxter won the women's 400-meter hurdles while finishing in a PSU personal-best 1:03.48. Baxter beat the No. 2 finisher in the event – Montana State's Ahna Kreitinger – by close to 3.5 seconds, and beat her time of 1:04.05 last week at the Willamette Invitational by over half a second.
Â
Ceil Dunleavy won the women's high jump in her debut as a Viking Saturday. Dunleavy cleared 5-05.00 (1.65m) – two inches higher than any other competitor –moving her into a tie for eighth all time in the event at Portland State.
Â
The Vikings didn't win any of the throw events, but got a pair of good performances from
Angela Mumford and
Megan Cornett.
Â
Mumford crushed her PSU personal best in the shot put while placing second with a best throw of 41-08.00 (12.70m)
Â
Cornett – a dual-sport athlete at Portland State who also competes for the women's soccer team – moved up to eighth all time in the women's javelin while placing seventh with a best throw of 132-08 (40.43m). Cornett was just off the top 10 while throwing 126-07.50 (38.59m) in her debut last week at the Willamette Invitational, and beat that distance by over six feet Saturday.
Â
The Vikings have next week off before they return to competition at the Pelluer Invitational, April 13-14, in Cheney, Wash.
