Robinson Sets Personal-Best First-Day Score in Decathlon at Bryan Clay Invitational

RESULTS

AZUSA, Calif. —
Donté Robinson set a decathlon personal best in only one event on the first day of the Bryan Clay Invitational Wednesday, and yet still set a personal-best first-day score of 3,565 points as he chases a national qualifying spot at the meet.

Robinson beat out his previous personal-best first-day score of 3,523 points by more than 40 points, which he set at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships last season.

Robinson made his big gain in the long jump, as he set an outdoor personal best in the event with a jump of 22-00.25 (6.71m). That scored him 746 points, more than 50 points better than he had scored previously in the event.

Robinson wasn't far off his decathlon PRs in any of the other events, and came within 20 points of his personal bests in three of the other four events between the shot put, high jump and 400 meters. Robinson threw 35-08.00 (10.87m) in the shot put, just over four inches behind his current decathlon personal best in the event of 36-00.25 (10.98m). Robinson followed that with a clearance of 6-02.25 (1.89m) in the high jump, half an inch behind his decathlon personal best in the event of 6-02.75 (1.90m). Robinson closed with a time of 50.36 seconds in the 400 meters, .35 seconds behind his personal best of 50.01 seconds.

Robinson will need a monster day on the second day of the decathlon if he hopes to put up a score that will be good enough to qualify him for nationals. The final qualifying score in the decathlon last season was 7,471 points, and Robinson would need to score 3,906 points Thursday to match that. Robinson set his personal-best second-day score at 3,418 points at the Boxer Combined Event earlier this season, meaning he would need to improve on that by close to 500 points to match last season's final qualifying mark.

Robinson will start the second day of the decathlon with the 110-meter hurdles at 1 p.m. (PT).
