Volleyball Adds Three for 2018

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland State Head Volleyball Coach Michael Seemann as announced the additions Mary Jo McBride, Peyton McBride, and Mackenzie Sullivan for the 2018-19 academic year.

"We are very proud of our incoming class of student-athletes who are joining us this fall," Seemann said. "This is a very skilled class, which has to potential to impact our roster sooner rather than later. All three of our incoming student-athletes will be excellent compliments to a veteran group of attackers, making our team complete."

Mary Jo McBride, a setter from Paradise Valley, Ariz., was a first-team all-conference selection at Long Beach Community College playing under Misty May-Treanor and Debbie Green. She averaged 11.63 assists per set while tallying 52 kills as a freshman. She played one year at Long Beach State, appearing in one match.

"Mary Jo will bring and intense competitive attitude, and experience to our setting position this fall. We are so pleased to have Mary Jo join our program and anticipate her making an impact on our offense immediately," Seemann added. "She is hungry to impact a program, and ultimately win matches. She has speed, can defend, and has an accurate, reliable serve. She can deliver the ball accurately from just about anywhere on the court. We are excited to have her join our program this fall."

Peyton, McBride, an outside hitter from Temecula, Calif., led Temecula Valley High School to a 29-5 overall and a 9-1 league mark and made it to the 2017 CIF Southern Section Division I second round as a senior. Her high school team was ranked 51st in the nation and 10th in California according to MaxPreps.com. She hit .385 with 365 kills, 237 digs, and 31 aces over 94 sets as a senior. She finished her career as a three-time All-Southwest League first team selection.

"Peyton is a force. She is an outside who can carry a heavy load of attempts, takes huge swings when it counts, and is an excellent ball handler," Seemann said. "She has the potential to make her mark on this conference immediately. Peyton is a great decision maker, she can influence the ball in so many ways, and is very effective at scoring points, front row and back. She is a solid passer, a fierce defender, and will be a dynamic player to watch."

Sullivan comes to the Park Blocks as a true all-around athlete. The Placentia, Calif. native set the El Dorado High School record for most varsity letters earned. She lettered four times in volleyball and track, twice in soccer, and once in water polo and basketball. She was a three-time all-conference first team selection in volleyball and led her team to back-to-back North Hills League championships in 2017 and 2018.

"Mackenzie is a smooth ball handler and is excellent at reading the game. She is a play maker and can make the routine plays all day," Seemann added. "Mackenzie will be an anchor in the back row for us. Her ability to read attackers, and efficiently address the ball is excellent. She can score from the end-line, with a very reliable serve. She is an athlete and excels at just about any sport. We are so excited to have her join our roster in 2018."

Mary Jo McBride, Peyton McBride, and Sullivan join a very experienced Viking squad. The Vikings return 11 players, nine upperclassmen, from last year's squad that went 21-9 overall and 11-5 in Big Sky Conference play.
