Viking Distance Runners Post Three Top 10 Times on First Day of OSU High Performance Meet

RESULTS

CORVALLIS, Ore. —
Forget the year of the dog, it's been the year of the Viking distance runner.

The Viking distance runners have set six school records between the indoor and outdoor track seasons, and added three more top 10 performances at the OSU High Performance Meet Friday at the Whyte Track & Field Center.

Kaila Gibson, who broke one of the six distance records this season in the indoor 5,000 meters, moved up to eighth all time in the women's 1,500 meters while shaving close to 10 seconds off her personal best with her finish in 4:31.96. Sarah Medved, who has broken the school record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, ran in the same section of the 1,500 meters as Gibson, and finished in 4:41.44.

Alana Chaplin can claim another of the six school records this season after she broke the school record in the women's 2,000-meter steeplechase at the beginning of March. Chaplin was running the more-common 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday, and knocked more than 11 seconds off her personal best while finishing in 11:20.05.

That moves Chaplin up to third all time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, behind only Medved and Mandy Peterson, who had held the record with her time of 11:11.60 from 2003 until Medved broke it this season.

Jacob Emeterio set the tone for the day as he beat his personal best in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase by just under 47 seconds with his finish in 9:20.74. Emeterio set his previous personal best at the SF State Distance Carnival only four weeks ago, and yet crushed that time with his finish Friday.

Emeterio moved up to fifth all time in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase as a result, and now holds the best time by a Viking in the event since 2014.

Jason Rae did not move into the top 10 of the men's 5,000 meters, but still shaved more than 25 seconds off his personal best in the event while finishing in 15:07.53. Rae beat teammate Justin Wikler, who also ran in the third section of the 5,000, but Wikler posted the bigger improvement than Rae as his time of 15:21.50 Friday beat his previous best by over 28 seconds. Andrew Stafford also set a new personal best in the men's 1,500 meters, as he finished in 4:03.46.

The Vikings continue at the meet tomorrow, with events starting at 11:30 a.m. (PT).
