MOSCOW, Idaho — Nia Powdrell has a knack for outperforming the form charts at the Big Sky Championships.
Â
Powdrell had a breakout meet at the Big Sky Indoor Championships with fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the women's 60 and 200 meters, respectively, but trumped that Friday with a surprise second-place finish in the 100 meters on the final day of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships at the Dan O'Brien Outdoor Track Complex.
Â
Powdrell came into the meet ranked 11th in the Big Sky in the 100 meters, but came within three-thousandths of a second of pulling off an unlikely win. Running next to each other, Eastern Washington's Rebecca Tarbert edged out Powdrell in a photo finish, crossing the line in 11.632 seconds to Powdrell's time of 11.635 seconds.
Â
Powdrell still earned the first All-Big Sky honor of her career with the second-place finish, and moved up to fifth all time in the 100 meters at Portland State.
Â
Powdrell also outperformed the form chart in the 200 meters, though not quite so dramatically. Powdrell came into the Big Sky meet ranked 11th in the 200 meters – same as the 100 – but placed fifth in Friday's final in a personal-best 24.06 seconds. Powdrell advanced to the final in what was then a personal-best 24.10 seconds Thursday, moving her up to seventh all time in the event at Portland State.
Â
Chance Whitehurst followed Powdrell's heroics with the school record in the men's triple jump, as beat the record teammate
Jean-Luc Toku set last season with a mark of 48-11.75 (14.93m) on his sixth attempt of the day. Whitehurst got off to a rocky start to the triple jump – not recording distances on his first two attempts of the competition – but snuck into the final with a jump of 47-07.50 (14.52m) on his third attempt. Whitehurst then increased his distance to 48-00.75 (14.65m) on his fourth attempt, before setting the school record on his sixth jump of the day.
Â
Ta'mara Richey followed a similar path to Whitehurst in the women's triple jump in that she was well out of the final until her third and final attempt in the prelims. Richey saved herself with a jump of 37-10.00 (11.53m) on her third attempt of the day, as she moved up to eighth in the field to make the final. Richey then moved up to sixth with a seasonal-best jump of 38-10.50 (11.85m) on her sixth attempt.
Â
The Vikings also had athletes on both the men's and women's sides set personal bests without advancing to the finals of the triple jump.
Alexis Buckhaults jumped 36-08.50 (11.19m) in the first flight of the women's triple jump, 5.5 inches better than her prep personal best, and 17.5 inches better than her previous best at Portland State.
Kevin Luyamba, meanwhile, jumped a personal-best 46-04.00 (14.12m) in the first flight of the men's triple jump, moving him into a tie with teammate
Jaron Barrow for seventh all time at PSU.
Â
Kamal-Craig Golaube knocked another tenth of a second off his personal best in the 110-meter hurdles while scoring three points for the Viking men with a sixth-place finish in the final. Golaube finished in 14.34 seconds, a tenth of a second better than his time of 14.44 seconds in the prelims, which was a big personal best for Golaube at the time.
Â
Over both days of the Big Sky meet, Golaube knocked three-tenths of a second off his old personal best of 14.64 seconds, and more than half a second off his PSU best of 14.89 seconds, which he set less than two weeks ago at the OSU High Performance meet on April 28. Additionally, Golaube moved up to second all time in the 110-meter hurdles with his time in the prelims, and only bettered that time with his performance in the final.
Â
Golaube also scored a point for the Vikings with an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 56.51 seconds.
Â
Katie Baxter placed sixth on the women's side of the 400-meter hurdles, as she set a PSU personal best in the event for the second straight day with her finish in 1:02.11. Baxter had moved into a tie for seventh all time at Portland State in the 400-meter hurdles with her time in the prelims, but jumped another two spots to fifth all time with her time in Friday's final.
Â
The Viking men picked up an additional point from their 4x100-meter relay team, as
Se Min Park, Donté Robinson,
Zack Davis and
Justin Desaki finished eighth in a seasonal-best 42.37 seconds. The Viking men also set a seasonal best in the 4x400-meter relay as Davis,
Austen Hvidsten, Barrow and
Will Payton placed 11th in 3:23.46.
Â
The Big Sky Outdoor Championships end the season for most of the Vikings. Robinson,
Sarah Medved and
Alex Cisneros have the potential to advance to the regional or national meets, but won't find out their fates until the qualifying period closes at the end of the day Sunday.
