Vision for Viking Athletics – Accomplishment Check-List
“Biggest in the Big Sky”
Vision
The vision for the Portland State University Athletics program is to 1) develop into the Big Sky Conference’s dominant athletic program over the next 3-5 years; 2) develop a reputation for superb service to its student-athletes, 3) become an integral part of the PSU campus culture, 4) and have PSU student-athletes leave the University with a strong sense of connection to PSU and a life-long affinity.
Defining Dominant
The benchmarks of dominance will be defined primarily, but not exclusively, by athletic and academic accomplishments. The following accomplishments will be indicative of the fulfillment of the Vision for Viking Athletics:
• Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Women Volleyball, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Golf, and Softball to win the Big Sky Regular Season or Tournament Championship every 3 to 4 years. –
7 OF 8 ACCOMPLISHED
• Men’s and Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country, and Men’s and Women’s Tennis to their respective NCAA Competitions at least once every 3 to 4 years. –
1 OF 2 ACCOMPLISHED
• PSU Athletics scores an annual graduation success rate that exceeds the campus average by 15% and ranks in the top 4 of the Big Sky conference. -
ACCOMPLISHED
Bridge to Dominance
In order to achieve a position of dominance in the Big Sky, it will be necessary for the University and community to make investments in a few select areas of criteria need, including:
• Renovation of the Peter Stott Center to include a 4,000-4,500 seat events center, improved sports medicine, strength & conditioning, and academic service areas, as well as office space to accommodate athletic programming needs. –
IN PROGRESS
• Academic Support Services with the goal of increasing graduation success rates and the implementation of a life skills program. -
ACCOMPLISHED
• Enhancement of the Viking Athletic Fund and scholarship funding with the goal of fully funding athletic scholarships and creating post-eligibility and summer school scholarship support. –
2 OF 3 ACCOMPLISHED, 3RD IN PROGRESS
The bridge to dominance isn’t defined entirely by economics. The Athletic program and University must pursue important programmatic objectives, such as:
• Build a internal culture of success and integrity -
ACCOMPLISHED
• Build a culture of service to the development of PSU’s student-athletes -
ACCOMPLISHED
• Foster stronger relationships with its campus partners -
ACCOMPLISHED
• Become further engaged in the Portland community -
ACCOMPLISHED
• Celebrate Portland State’s unique academic, cultural, and social characteristics -
ACCOMPLISHED
Attainment of the Viking Vision will wield tangible and intangible benefits for the University, Athletic program, staff and student-athletes, and greater community. Leadership decisions over the next 5 years will be focused on supporting growth towards these stated goals.
